The UCC Sports Department in association with the Mardyke Walking Football Group are organising a Six Hour Walking Football Marathon at the Mardyke Sports Grounds on Saturday 25th July from 10.00am - 4.00pm in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation in Ireland dedicated to supporting people living with MND, their families, and their carers. They provide vital services, specialised equipment, and specialised nursing care to over 400 people across the country currently living with MND. This is a terminal condition. To help ensure they can continue this essential work, we are organising a fundraising Walking Football Marathon and we would be deeply grateful for the support of our University Community. All funds raised will go directly to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association through the iDonate.ie platform.

Many of you may know Tomás Tyner (The University Photographer). I know Tomás in a number of guises but he was one of the founding members of the Mardyke Walking Football Group & has remained a strong friend & supporter of the group. Tomás’s last day at work in UCC was December 4th 2023. Since then he has been battling MND with courage and good humour. The Mardyke Walking Football group have come up with the novel idea to organise this marathon fundraiser to show their support for Tomás and raise much needed funds for this fantastic organisation.

I am sure many of you know of other UCC colleagues who have also battled this disease like Pat Murphy who worked in the Sports Department as a Sports Operative and the UCC Works Department prior to that, Ted O Leary, General Services Operative, & Edward Burke, Printing Office to name but a few.

How You Can Help:
We would love to see as many familiar faces as possible at the Mardyke on Saturday 25th July. It’s a wonderful opportunity to catch up and support a great cause. Maybe see what Walking Football is all about? Sign up and register through our fundraiser page:
