🏌️‍♂️ JIMMY BRUEN: A MUSKERRY LEGACY
In December 1935, one of Ireland’s greatest amateur golfers, Jimmy Bruen, received his first handicap of six from Muskerry Golf Club—something he never forgot.
That handicap enabled the talented 16-year-old to compete in the British Boys Championship at Birkdale Golf Club from 25th to 29th August 1936. On 29th August, Jimmy was crowned British Boys Champion, proudly representing Muskerry and Ireland and becoming the first Irish golfer to win the prestigious title.
Jimmy went on to represent Ireland and compete in the Walker Cup, along with many regional championships.
His remarkable connection with Muskerry continues today through our annual Bruen Boys competition, kindly sponsored by the Cahill family. The trophy is a Captain’s Prize Cup won by Jimmy at Muskerry in the early 1940s. It was later presented back to the Club, through Tim O’Brien, by Jimmy’s widow, Nell Bruen, herself a formidable golfer and golf administrator. Her wish was that it would help promote competitive golf among the young boys of Muskerry for generations to come.
In August 2016, Muskerry was honoured to welcome Nell and the Bruen family to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Jimmy’s historic victory. Then aged 97, Nell delivered a wonderful speech recalling Jimmy’s early years and extraordinary golfing career. Jimmy sadly died far too young, aged just 52, in 1972.
Nell and the Bruen family have been exceptionally generous to Muskerry Golf Club over the years, presenting several treasured items belonging to Jimmy for display in our Bruen Corner. Jimmy’s son, David Bruen, continues this close connection by attending the Bruen Boys presentation each year.
Muskerry Golf Club and the Bruen family share an enduring bond of respect, friendship and affection—one that we are immensely proud to preserve.
We encourage members to watch the accompanying video and learn more about Jimmy’s extraordinary golfing achievements on our Club website and in the Muskerry Golf Club Centenary Book.
We may never see his like again.

A fascinating chapter in Muskerry Golf Club’s history ⛳
Between January and May 1907, Dr Arthur Ainslie Hudson, a physician at St Ann’s Hydro, worked alongside the Hydro’s golf professional, John McNamara, to lay out the original nine-hole course at Coachford Junction.
Muskerry Golf Club officially opened on Saturday, 4 May 1907. On that historic day, Dr Hudson’s young daughter, Marjorie, performed the opening ceremony beneath a rose arch, breaking a bottle of champagne on a stone to mark the occasion.
St Ann’s Hydro played an important role in the Club’s beginnings, supporting the development of an independent course close enough for its clients to use and donating course-maintenance equipment when its own golf facilities closed.
As Muskerry approaches its 120th anniversary on 4 May 2027, we remember and salute everyone—past and present—who has contributed to the Club’s remarkable story.
Our sincere thanks to Fergus Hannon for researching and recording this important piece of Muskerry’s heritage for future generations.
