The Board is a democratically elected body, representing, presently fifty three (53) clubs and two Divisions - East Cork and West Cork Divisions. As of August 2017, Cork boasts the largest number of clubs of any county, with Dublin next on thirty four (34).

NACA Veterans and Youths Championships
Mardyke, Cork, Sunday July 13th 1980

Notable double for Cork athletes
Report by MARK WOODS, Cork Examiner Monday July 14th 1980, Page 10

CORK athletes achieved a notable ‘double’ in the All-Ireland NACA Veterans and Youths Championships at the Mardyke yesterday.

In the Youths relay, the Cork team of C. Guerin, D. Crowley, P. Horgan, and T. Finn had little or no trouble in defeating teams from Tipperary and Kerry, who could only provide token opposition.

However, in the Veterans relay, Cork had to withstand a tremendous late rally from both Meath and Louth to emerge victorious. The Cork team consisting of P. Golden, J. O’Keeffe, E. O’Sullivan and S. Burke got off to a great start and led coming into the final change over.

But a determined effort from the losers made things very uncomfortable for Cork in that final run in.

However they held off the strong challenge for the second part of the ‘double’.

The most promising youth on view was Derek Smith of the Navan club.

SOUTH DUBLIN head the hunt for the top honours in the Omega Division “A” League when they accumulated 91 points at the Thomond College track in Limerick yesterday.

They took the scoring honours in this particular section from Cork’s Leevale, who ran into second place, but the Dubliibside are on top overall following the running of the second section in Belfield yesterday.

There is another series to come next weekend as the teams fight for the right to a place in the finals and only six teams from the top flight are to go through, although they will be joined by the top two from Division “B”.

South Dublin now head the list from Dublin City Harriers, who are on 87 points, Crusaders on 85Vi, and Leevale who are in fourth with 79

In Limerick yesterday both Brian Dunne and Paul Markey of South Dublin completed notable doubles. Dunne racea home comfortably in the men’s 200 and 400 metres, while Markey had his double in the 800 and 1,500 metres events.

While Pat Hartigan of Limerick was winning the shot, his brother Bemie took the discus event in the “A” section, and Limerick hurling trainer Tim Crowe won the 400 metres hurdles. Paul Gleeson of Nenagh ran in for a fine double in the “B” section, winning both the 200 and 400 metres.

There were three doubles in the women’s Tissot League. Bernadette Quilty of Waterford was in magnificent form in the dismal conditions, coming home first in both the 200 and 400 metres events, and she was also second in the long jump.

Her feat was equalled by Barbara Johnson (West Limerick), who won the 100 metres hurdles and the long jump, and who then ran home second behind Quilty in the 200 metres. Phil Barrett was another with a double — the Limerick girl taking top spots in the shot and the discus.
