The Irish Wildlife Trust are disappointed to see the number of newspaper articles reporting on this accident without giving the details of what happened.

🎣The boat had several anglers on board who were shark fishing for recreation. A 1.4m Blue shark was caught and brought on board. As the man was taking the hook out of the sharks mouth, the shark bit his leg. Shark bites are a rare and unusual occurrence, but a perfectly natural response from an animal that is in a stressful situation. We are glad that the emergency services reacted quickly and the man is recovering well in hospital.

⚠️ Unfortunately, many articles have sensationalised this incident. The writing has failed to accurately describe what happened and gives the impression that someone was attacked by a shark unprovoked. Sharks are wild animals and like any wild animal, the utmost care must be taken if you are planning to have any interactions with them. People should undergo the appropriate training and have the experience and knowledge needed if they plan to interact with any wild animal.

🦈 Globally sharks have gained a bad reputation for being 'man eaters' due to the media not accurately reporting on situations and writing for dramatic effect. This has resulted in the deliberate culling of sharks across the globe. Sharks are a vital part of many marine ecosystems but unfortunately pelagic shark populations around the world have declined by over 70% since 1970. This is due to many factors including the fin and meat trade and being caught accidently in commercial fishing operations. Unfortunately many people don't realise or care how devastating this is for the entire health of the marine environment as for many people, sharks are just seen as 'man eaters'. It is the responsibilty of journalists to ensure that they report accurately on any incidents involving wildlife to prevent the negative consequences that could arise from this.

Anastasia Kulinich had the idea for me to dive down and take a picture of the group from below. They were planning to form a circle, which somehow turned out to be a heart in the end😂💙
I didn't take my time so it was out of frame🥲

But who needs perfect pictures anyway, right?🤣 The craic is the only thing that really counts🤣

Nature is already perfection, but sharks in particular are something of a miracle to me💙🦈🥹

Meeting blue sharks in Irish waters is sometimes challenging but possible. You most likely won't see them during a snorkel from shore, but they do live off the Irish coast😊

Here you see very inquisitive (food-driven) blue sharks, unlikely to be aggressive (and weren't on the day), but observing them from the water does need precautions and a couple of considerations before you can swim with them.

If I could have a wish in this world, it would be to protect them all (all wildlife, really).💙 And let people know how important co-existing is.🙏🏼

If you (or your pet's food) eat fish, know where it comes from.

Millions of sharks still end up dead as bycatch or because of their fins (yes, still happening in Europe).

As amazing as it is to see them, let’s not stop talking about their protection and conservation.
