✨ Understanding Tight VS Taut ✨
Sometimes when we say a muscle feels tight it’s actually really overstretched and ‘taut’. It’s a misunderstanding in the vernacular but when someone comes in to the clinic to me I understand what they mean when they say something feels tight. I’m not saying it’s a one size fits all but here is an example to demonstrate how an area that feels tight is actually overstretched, taut and maybe weak
Take the mid back. Major muscles in this area are the rhomboids and mid-traps. Usually when people complain of pain or tightness here it’s due to a forward posture. While work in this area is beneficial to help relax the overstretched (‘taut’) muscles. We also need to address the an antagonist area which is actually likely tight - the pecs and anterior deltoids.
Understanding that the tight feeling might be from a weak, overstretched muscle will help you make better decisions in the gym and with your recovery.
