A few games coming up for our underage teams this weekend and into early next week.

Our U-14 Premier team welcome St.Colmcilles to Carnaross on Sunday morning for Round 3 of their Championship.

On Monday evening our U-16’s head to Kilcloon for Round 3 of the Div.4 Championship and then on Tuesday evening our U-14 Division 2 team will make the trip to Senechelstown for their third round game.

All in Ballinlough GFC would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to the Ryan Family on the passing of Tim Ryan, Uncle of our current Chairman Vincent Ryan, at the age of 92.

Tim played football for Ballinlough all throughout the 50’s while serving his mechanics apprenticeship with Tommy McDonnell in Seymourstown, and he lined out at Corner back in Ballinlough’s inaugural Intermediate Championship success in 1954, alongside his three brothers Jim, Tom & Bob.

Following a stint in Canada, Tim returned and set up his own business in Blanchardstown and Ryan’s Garage is still open to this day, while Tim made regular visits back home to Ballinlough even driving himself up only last year.

Despite being exiled in Dublin, Tim bought the Meath Chronicle every week religiously to keep himself updated on all Ballinlough affairs and no matter how long he was away, Ballinlough was always regarded as home.

Pictured is Tim with his son Niall in Ballinlough just last June when he made a visit home.

Carnlough Gaels made the trip to Dunderry on what turned out to be a sun-kissed Wednesday evening for Round 2 of the Division 3 U-18 Football Championship.

A couple of early Carnlough Gael efforts were sent wide of the posts before Dunderry opened the scoring with a goal in the third minute.
That score seemed to kickstart Carnlough Gaels into the correct gear with Conor Yore making a fine run forward and Luke Harte slotting over for the games opening point.

Excellent work from Robert O’Brien, who was outstanding all evening, set Drew Donaghy up for his first score in the fifth minute, and Carnlough Gaels took the lead when a dipping shot from Luke Harte landed kindly into the hands of James Brooks who smashed the ball to the roof of the net in the eighth minute to leave Carnlough leading by two points.

Points were traded when Conor Finn showed tenacious tackling to set Hugh O’Reilly up for a score, before Dunderry landed one of their own seconds later.

The work-rate from the Carnlough Gaels side was telling in the opening quarter and further good link up play between Luke Harte and Paddy White created the space for Drew Donaghy to send over two quick fire points by the 15th minute and Carnlough lead by four.

All that good work was wiped out seconds later though when Dunderry’s Cian Baker O’Reilly practically walked through the defence before finishing to the net and it was a one point game again.
Three minutes later Carnlough Gaels had a goal chance of their own but despite showing great feet to create space for himself, Conor Yore was unlucky to have his shot saved by the fingertips of the Dunderry net-minder.

That setback didn’t deter the young Carnlough Gaels men and they were inspired when Hugh O’Reilly sent over a superb point from play in the 19th minute, before another point from Drew Donaghy and an O’Reilly free in the 22nd minute.
From that kick-out Conor Yore fetched the ball effortlessly in midfield and played a perfect kick pass into Luke Harte, who turned his man and fired over once more to extend Carnlough Gaels lead to five points.

With five minutes left on the clock Dunderry worked hard to try and get a couple more scores on the board but superb defending from Eoin Ennis and Adam Darcy thwarted any serious threats and the scoreline remained the same.
So when the impressive Referee Declan Tolster blew the half time whistle Carnlough Gaels led by five points on a scoreline of 1-09 to Dunderry’s 2-01.

Upon the restart the first score of the half came from a simple tap-over when Referee Declan Tolster was alert to a 3v3 breach from Dunderry, with Hugh O’Reilly tipping over the free point on offer.
Similar to the first half Dunderry got themselves an early goal, Cian Baker O’Reilly coming up with the goods once more, but Carnlough Gaels were a man down with Luke Harte receiving treatment at the time.

A pointed free for Dunderry had the potential to breathe life into the home side as they only trailed by two points, but Carnlough Gaels stood firm with Drew Donaghy going on a fine solo run before laying off to the aforementioned Luke Harte who while still nursing a sore back ignored the pain and fired over in the 38th minute.

The next score could hands down be described as the score of the game as Hugh O’Reilly sent over an outrageous two pointer from play in the 42nd minute, his brother Frank might be currently plying his trade in New York but this one was from way Downtown from the younger of the O’Reilly clan.

While that score was brilliant for its individuality, the next Carnlough Gaels point was an exhibition in teamwork as Robert O’Brien, Conor Yore and Liam Farrelly all combined showing quick hands before Luke Harte took the final pass and sent the ball over the bar.
Luke Harte seemed to be everywhere this evening and it was his interception on a Dunderry free in the 45th minute saw the ball worked forward and Cian Gaughran getting his name on the scoresheet with a well taken point.

After coughing up a healthy lead the last time these two sides met Carnlough Gaels were in no mood to repeat history, and enhanced their lead when Conor Yore sent a lovely ball in and James Brooks collected possession before turning and unleashing a rocket of a shot to the back of the net in the 47th minute.

A Drew Donaghy point from play was followed up by a two point free from that man Hugh O’Reilly again in the 51st minute, and while they were struggling to get many scores Dunderry kept battling and got themselves a fortuitous fourth goal when the ball dropped and landed in the net rather than its intended target of over the bar.

Carnlough Gaels didn’t panic though and saw out the game superbly with Edward Farrelly and Robert O’Brien putting in huge tackles to deny Dunderry any further goal chances, and with Hugh O’Reilly nailing a 45’ down the other end followed up by a point from play and a pointed free from Evan Yore by the 60th minute, there was only ever going to be one winner this evening.

So when Referee Declan Tolster blew the full time whistle Carnlough Gaels took the win on a scoreline of 2-21 to Dunderry’s 4-02.

Ballinlough welcomed Walterstown to the Park for Round 2 of the All County Junior Football Championship, and with both sides tasting defeat in Round 1, it was a chance to get back on track, and for Ballinlough they took that chance with aplomb, despite being somewhat under strength this evening.

The visitors opened the scoring with a point from play in the fifth minute, but it didn’t take Ballinlough long to settle with Jamie Casserly sending over a fine two point free in the 10th minute, before a short kick out from stand in keeper Podge Muldoon, found Robert O’Brien and he did exceptionally well to evade his marker and power forward before picking out an eye of the needle pass to Luke Harte who gathered possession on the run and fired to the net in the 14th minute.

From that kick-out Sean Tunney did very well to pressurise the Walterstown defence and gather possession before tapping over a moment later.
The home side took full control of proceedings with another point for Luke Harte, a second two point free from Jamie Casserly, and a superb score for Sean Tunney in the 29th minute to leave them leading by nine points.

The half wasn’t complete just yet though as Robert O’Brien did ever so well to win the kick out and bear down on goal, before very unselfishly laying the ball over to Ciaran Ryan, and with just the keeper to beat, he sent a lovely outside of the boot shot past the keeper and into the bottom left corner of the net to boost Ballinlough once more.

So when Referee Peter Skelly blew the half time whistle Ballinlough lead by twelve on a scoreline of 2-07 to Walterstown’s solitary point.

Upon the restart Ballinlough started as brightly as they finished the first with Jamie Casserly pointing from play before Walterstown got their second point of the evening a moment later.

Casserly added another brilliant two point score from play to extend their lead before veteran Lorcan Maguire rolled back the years and added a super point from play in the 35th minute.
Another Walterstown point from play was soon cancelled out when Benji Smith used some basketball skills we didn’t know he had to control a bouncing ball along the sideline before finding Peter Downey, and he did exceptionally well to take the ball on the move and round his man before working it forward once more where Mick Geraghty fed Sean Tunney and he fired over in the 38th minute, an excellent team score from Ballinlough.

Speaking of rolling back the years, a lack of options in the goal-keeper position this evening led to Club stalwart Podge Muldoon answering the call and donning the gloves once more, and he pulled off a fine save in the 42nd minute to deny Walterstown a shot at goal.

Podge was called into action once more in the 46th minute when he pulled off a massive double save to deny what looked a certain goal and the visitors had to make do with a point from play in the 47th minute.

With Walterstown attacking more in the second half Ballinlough had to have their wits about them and there was no one more alive to the danger than Podge Muldoon as he made this second half all about him as he pulled off yet another super save in the 50th minute after a loose pass from a defensive colleague left Podgie one v one with the attacker but there was only ever going to be one winner as Muldoon stood big and strong to deny the chance!

To their credit Walterstown kept knocking on the door and added a pointed free in the 52nd minute before a point from play in the 54th minute.
Further points by the 58th minute reduced the deficit, and despite Ballinlough not scoring for twelve minutes in the second half, they had their hard work done and ran out convincing winners when Referee Peter Skelly blew the full time whistle on a scoreline of 2-12 to Walterstown’s 0-08.
