Sullane 2-2 Mogeely B

After three narrow losses to start their league campaign, Mogeely Junior B got off the mark in AUL Division 3 with a hard fought point on the road, fighting back to equalise on two occasions. The game was evenly contested throughout but it was Sullane who went ahead in the tie on 15 minutes when a through ball caught out the Mogeely defence and Sullane striker Keane cooly slotted past Cayden Hyde to make it 1-0. Mogeely responded very well creating a number of chances and got their reward when Sullanes keeper failed to hold on to Jack Clifford’s free kick and Darragh Murphy pounced to score his 3rd goal in 4 games and level the tie.

The teams regrouped at half time and it was Sullane who started brighter and got in behind Mogeely’s defence in the 49th minute when a long kick from their goalkeeper was latched on to by Keane again who chipped it over the onrushing Hyde to put Sullane ahead again. To their credit, Mogeely responded well again creating a few chances in the next 20 minutes before the influential Oran Murphy was first to react in the six yard box and bury the ball into the back of the net to level the game in the 68th minute. Mogeely pushed for a winner in the next 10 minutes and were unlucky not to get a 3rd before Sullane took control from 80 minutes onwards putting pressure on Mogeelys defence. Mogeelys task was made harder in the final minutes when Ruben Duhig received his marching orders in the 88th minute for an honest lunge that the referee deemed to be last man and showed the red card to the unfortunate centre back. Mogeelys 10 men fought hard for the remainder of the game including 6 minutes of injury time while Sullane piled on the pressure.

Good team performances often still need a big moment from your goalkeeper and Hyde saved his team from heartbreak in the 94th minute when Sullane produced the biggest chance of the game only to see their effort acrobatically tipped over the crossbar as Mogeely held on for a well deserved point.

Mogeely B 4-5 Los Zarcos B

Mogeely Junior Bs got their league season underway with a narrow loss to Los Zarcos B on Sunday afternoon. The home team started brightly and on the front foot and took the lead in the 7th min when captain Ethan O Connor passed squarely to Dara Wimpenny who saw his shot from 25 yards fizz into the corner of the net. Los Zarcos went up a gear thereafter and when their own shot from 25 yards looped in under the crossbar it changed the momentum of the game, Mogeely losing their way and struggling to recover for the rest of the half. Los Zarcos took control of the tie and added two more goals to make it 1-3 at the break.

Mogeely regrouped at half time and came out a different team in the second half and the introduction of Kevin O’Riordan in the 49th minute added valuable experience and calmness in midfield. Mogeely made it 2-3 in the 56th minute when Ruben Duhig rose highest from a corner only to see his header parried by the Los Zarcos keeper but his centre back partner Olann Jones scrambled the ball home from the rebound. In the 68th minute Duhig was first to the ball again and steered Alan Donnellys brilliant corner home to level the game.

The momentum had completely swung Mogeelys way now and 5 minutes later Darragh Murphy had the home bench off their seats when he engineered a small bit of space just inside the box and buried it into the far corner to score what we hoped might be the winner.

However, Mogeelys young side suffered a confidence sapping setback shortly after when Los Zarcos long ball into the box caused problems and it was suddenly 4-4 with 15 minutes to go.

It was befitting of the crazy nature of the game for there to be a winner, and while Mogeely went in search for it and looked the more likely, they were cruelly punished when Los Zarcos broke away down the left wing and saw a pinpoint cross to the back post bundled home for the winner with 5 minutes to go. Mogeely went for it late on and had the oppositions defence under pressure in the final minutes but the away side held on for the 3 points.

A tough ending that our lads didn’t deserve but plenty of positives to take from our opening game and we will continue to improve as a squad.

A big shoutout to our young players in particular: David Jones with his first start while Ben Murphy, Dara Wimpenny, Noah O Connor, Jeremiah Afenitan and Kelly Asibor all making their full debuts at Junior level.

Mogeely FC would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mick (Michael) O’Sullivan on his sad passing.

Mick was one of the founding members of Mogeely FC in 1988, helping to establish the club and laying the foundations for what it has become today.

Almost four decades later, the club continues to be a huge part of the local community, and Mick’s contribution to its beginnings will always be remembered and appreciated.

Our thoughts are with Mick’s family, friends and all who knew him at this very sad time.

⚽ Craig Shead Football Camp – Mogeely FC – Next Week ⚽

Just a reminder that the Craig Shead Football Camp takes place at Mogeely FC next week.

As well as quality coaching sessions focused on developing technical skills, confidence and creativity, the camp will also include inflatable 3v3 pitches, which are always a big hit with the players and provide lots of touches, quick decision-making and plenty of fun.

Craig is also involved in Waterford FC Pre-Academy recruitment, so it’s a great opportunity for players to experience a high-quality coaching environment while enjoying a brilliant few days of football.

The camp is suitable for players of all abilities, and there are still places available if anyone hasn’t booked yet.

What a day for our club and for the u15s in particular. With Ringmahon 15s visiting yesterday, the boys knew a point would seal the title — and knew it wouldn’t come easy. We tested their keeper for the first 20 minutes with no luck, until Andrew broke the deadlock with a rocket. Eliot’s shot then fell kindly to Roan and we went in 2-0 up at half time. We knew we were on top, we just needed a bit more composure in front of goal.

Straight from the restart in the second half, Eliot delivered again like he’s done all season. We started rolling the bench from there. We won what should’ve been our second penalty of the day, and Adam did what Adam does — dispatched it with aplomb. We pushed him further forward after that and he scored another 3 goals to make it 7-0 and 4 for him.

Fantastic team performance from all 16 involved today. Champions at last — 8 years in the making. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us, the scenes of joy were brilliant to see. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, champions 🏆

Everyone at Mogeely FC would like to wish the very best of luck to our players Aidan B, Ryan D, Ryan K & Eoin O'C, alongside John Brennan who is a member of the coaching team, who are representing WWEC Football League & the club, this week at the Kennedy Cup in Limerick.

This is a fantastic achievement and the reward for years of hard work, dedication, commitment, and countless hours spent training and playing the game they love. We are incredibly proud to see them wearing the WWEC colours while representing the club on one of the biggest stages in Irish schoolboy football.

The Kennedy Cup is a unique experience, giving players the opportunity to spend a week away from home with their teammates, create lifelong memories, and test themselves against some of the best young footballers from across the country.
