Bobby's Prize Produces a Thriller

The Professional's Prize, kindly sponsored by Bobby Fallon, is one of those competitions that tends to sit on the members' wish list from the moment the fixture list is published.

It's a prize that carries a bit of extra significance. Everyone starts the season with plenty of optimism and a mental list of competitions they'd love to get their name on & the Professional's Prize is very much one of them.

This year's competition certainly delivered.

Declan Smyth, Shane Donnelly and James Kiernan all finished on a superb 43 points, with Declan taking the title on the last nine. Shane was runner-up, while James had the consolation of taking the Gross Prize after a magnificent one-under-par round.

Mickey Rushe wasn't far behind on 41 points, enough to secure 3rd place.

Professional's Prize Results

πŸ₯‡ Declan Smyth – 43 pts (Last 9)
πŸ₯ˆ Shane Donnelly – 43 pts
πŸ₯‰ Mickey Rushe – 41 pts
🏌️ Gross Prize: James Kiernan – One under 71...super shooting!

A word too for Bobby Fallon himself. Bobby has become a real part of the fabric of Concra Wood, making a huge effort to get to know and support members across the club. His dry wit is never far away and his work in improving our range and practice facilities is something that benefits everyone who picks up a club.

We're lucky to have him at Concra & it's fitting that his Professional's Prize remains one of the competitions everyone wants to win.

Congratulations to Declan, Shane, James and all the prize winners.

Golfer of the Year – The Chasing Pack

Frank McDonnell still holds the advantage at the top....but the chasing pack is beginning to bunch up.

Jamie McCann Smyth sits second on 356, with Mark Currie on 351. Just behind them, four players are tied on 347:

Gavan McEneaney – 347
Paudie McEneaney – 347
Jody McMonagle – 347
Patrick Tavey – 347

That's eight players separated by just 12 points with every point becoming increasingly valuable as the season moves towards its conclusion.

Frank may have the lead, but with that many players within striking distance, nobody can afford to relax just yet.

The GOY race is very much alive.

Prandy Duffy Delivers Once Again

One of the most anticipated weekends in the Concra Wood calendar returned in style as members and our US visitors gathered for the annual Prandy Duffy Cup.

As always, the golf was fiercely competitive, the banter flowed freely and friendships old and new were renewed both on and off the course.

When the dust settled, it was Pauric McNally who emerged victorious with an outstanding 44-point haul to claim this year's title.

πŸ₯‡ Pauric McNally – 44 pts

πŸ₯ˆ Philip McBirney – 43 pts

πŸ₯‰ Barry O'Reilly – 40 pts

Congratulations to Pauric and all the prize winners.

The accompanying Ryder Cup-style contest once again provided plenty of drama, laughter and the occasional dubious claim of sporting integrity. As ever, the real winners were the friendships, stories and memories created over another fantastic weekend at Concra Wood.

Club Matchplay & Golfer of the Year

The draw for the 2026 Club Matchplay competitions has now been made and is posted in the clubhouse.

A quick glance at the brackets suggests there will be no shortage of intriguing contests in the weeks ahead, with several particularly juicy ties already catching the eye.

Matchplay has a wonderful habit of ignoring form, handicaps and reputations. One poor hole can be forgotten immediately, while one good hole can completely change the momentum of a match. Expect plenty of drama before the finalists eventually emerge.

Meanwhile, as the season begins to find its rhythm, the Golfer of the Year standings are also starting to take shape.

Joe Brady has set the early pace and leads the way for now, but with plenty of golf to be played and valuable points still up for grabs, there is a long road yet to travel.

Current standings can be viewed on Master Scoreboard under the Order of Merit section.

Inter-Club Update

Unfortunately, Garreth Woods' Junior Cup side saw their campaign come to an end at the quarter-final stage last Saturday.
Facing a very strong County Cavan team in Portadown, the lads battled hard but ultimately came up short against quality opposition.

Johnny Redmond's Senior team were also in action against Bushfoot Golf Club. By all accounts it was a back-and-forth affair throughout, but Bushfoot eventually edged the contest.

Attention now turns to another busy weekend on the inter-club front.

Alan Bolger's All-Ireland Mixed team take on County Cavan as they look to continue their impressive run in the competition.

Meanwhile, Charlie McDonnell's Barton Shield side resume their campaign against Tandragee on Thursday following their excellent victories earlier this month.

Best of luck to all players and team Captain's involved.
