At SETU Carlow you have a choice of two degrees in Civil Engineering. By taking this course you will get the skills required to work as a Civil Engineering Technologist. Civil Engineering Technologists work alongside Civil Engineers in the Design, Construction and Maintenance of Civil Engineering Infrastructure. You may work in a design office using computers to produce drawings and 3d models for civil engineering projects such as roads and water treatment plants and distribution networks. You may be working on calculations for designing the geometry of a road or drainage network. You may use advanced land surveying techniques utilising gps to draw up maps for proposed roads, buildings, treatment plants, pipeline routes etc... You may be involved in testing materials such as soils, concrete and bituminous macadams to confirm that they are adequate for construction. You may work on site with a contractor organising the construction of a project - setting out the line and level for the road, planning and organising the construction operations and carrying out tests on materials, using drone methods to record and monitor progress. On our Level 7 Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree course, the emphasis is on making sure that you learn the key skills you will need for getting a good job! Computer Aided Drafting skills using Autocad, Revit and Civils 3D. Surveying Skills using Levels, Total Stations and GPS. Material testing skills for concrete, soils, stone aggregates and bituminous macadams. A good understanding of Civil Engineering Technology and the techniques used for constructing civil engineering projects such as roads, buildings, pipelines, bridges etc. You will learn how to create the best geometry for a new road, how to design a pipe network for surface water drainage, how to produce drawings for steel or reinforced concrete structures, how to test the ground to ensure adequate foundations for buildings and bridges. At SETU Carlow we place an emphasis on learning by doing! When you finish at SETU Carlow, you will be well equipped to work with civil engineering contractors, civil engineering consultants, site investigation contractors, local authorities, Irish Water, ESB and many others. You may also be able to transfer to our Level 8 Honours degree in Civil Engineering and take the final two years of that degree in order to qualify as a Civil Engineer. The second degree we offer at SETU Carlow is our four year L8 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering. By completing this course you will qualify as a Civil Engineer. Our course is accredited by Engineers Ireland as meeting their standard for a Level 8 degree for becoming a Chartered Engineer. Civil Engineers work in the Design, Construction and Maintenance of Civil Engineering Infrastructure. You may be involved in the design and construction of a new road, a water treatment plant, the structure of a building or bridge, a flood relief scheme or a rail network. Maintaining and upgrading the physical infrastructure on which our society depends is a critical part of what Civil Engineers do. Our Level 8 honours degree program is a broadly based civil engineering program which will enable you to work in many different areas of civil engineering. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of civil engineering through our unique mixture and theory and practice. We place a particular emphasis on practical skills and learning by doing. You will learn the core skills of a Civil Engineer in Geotechnics, Structures, Hydraulics & Water Engineering, Highway Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Building on lectures on the underlying engineering science and fundamental theories in these areas, you will apply and develop this knowledge in Project Work and in carrying out tests and experiments in our well equipped laboratories. On graduating from our Level 8 Honours degree you will be well equipped to work with Civil Engineering Consultants, Civil Engineering Contractors, Local Authorities, Irish Water, ESB, and many others. Our graduates work in areas such as Road Design & Construction, Geotechnics (dealing with behaviour of soils in the ground and in construction), Structural Design and Construction, Environmental Engineering, Water and Drainage Engineering.
