McDonnell Takes the Dan Kearney Open
There was a tremendous turnout at Buncrana Golf Club last weekend for the Dan Kearney Hon-Vice President Open Stableford, with members turning out in force to honour one of the club’s most respected and much-loved members. At 93 years of age, Dan Kearney is the club’s oldest serving member, and the excellent turnout was a fitting tribute to the high esteem in which Dan is held by everyone at the club. His long-standing commitment and contribution to Buncrana Golf Club were very much in evidence throughout the weekend.
With challenging weather conditions, including rain and strong winds, combined with some testing pin positions, scoring was always going to be difficult. In fact, only nine players managed to break par over the two days, highlighting just how tough the conditions were.
The overall prize was decided by a three-way break of a tie, with Patrick McDonnell (5) eventually emerging victorious on the strength of his superior back nine. Patrick finished on 40 points, edging out James Harkin (5) and Sammy Moore (20), who also recorded excellent scores of 40 points.
Patrick produced some outstanding golf throughout his round, returning an impressive one-over gross score, a particularly noteworthy performance given the difficult conditions. He will be hoping to carry this excellent run of form into the remainder of the season and possibly to the up coming Winter League. Congratulations to Patrick on a fine victory, and a special word of thanks to Dan Kearney for his continued contribution to Buncrana Golf Club and for providing the occasion for another hugely successful Open competition.
James Harkin claimed the Gross prize with his superb 1 over par gross round of 67, having just missed out on the top prize and Sammy Moore, who also just missed out on the Break of Tie took the Category 3 prize, The Category 2 prize was won by Mateusz Niedzielski with his score of 39pts.

There was a tremendous turnout at Buncrana Golf Club over the weekend for Mr Liam Henderson’s Captain’s Prizes, with a large field taking to the course in what were exceptional conditions. With the course presented in superb shape, everything was in place for a weekend of high-quality golf and the players certainly delivered. The man who emerged from a highly competitive field to claim the coveted first prize was the big-hitting Paul Mc Daid (8 ), who continues to enjoy a superb run of form. The Gross Prize went to the in-form Pauric O’Flaherty (0.6), who produced a sensational display of golf. Pauric recorded no fewer than seven birdies and just three bogeys on his way to a tremendous 4 Under Par (62 gross), underlining the quality of golf on show during one of the club’s biggest weekends of the year.
Eoin McNamee claimed the Category 1 prize with his fine return of 38pts.
