Rashenny Football Club

Rashenny Football Club Established in 1976 The Club was established in 1976 by a group of local men eager to participate in a regular game of football. Carndonagh F.C.

However, within a season their "team" had grown to a full club with such a demand for places that a second team was formed in 1977. Under the supervision of the ubiquitous Denis Doherty Rashenny "United" soon earned a reputation for success with perhaps the pinnacle being victory in the 1984 Carndonagh Open Cup. Meanwhile Rashenny "Rovers" chipped away with measured success. topped by a remarkable Cup Final performance in 1985 v. In 1986 the Club embarked on a major development programme to provide a football pitch and modem changing facilities for the area. By 1990 after a tremendous four year struggle the pitch was officially opened by Ireland's World Cup hero Paul McGrath. It was a great coup to acquire McGrath's services a month after the World Cup with his visit proving wholly enjoyable. Since then backed by financial assistance from both the F.A.I and the National Lottery, the club has embarked on stage II, the construction of changing rooms. Built entirely in a voluntary capacity by club members and volunteers from the local community, the facility has been completed in less than a year. It certainly stands as a fine example of the power of community co - operation!

Both senior men’s sides are back in action this Sunday morning.

Our First Team travel to the Cockhill Lower Pitch to take on Cockhill Colts, while our Reserves are at home in Trawbreaga Park against Dunree Reserves.

After last weekend’s excellent 6–2 win, John Grant’s side will be looking to build on that result, while OJ Cuffe’s Reserves will be hoping to bounce back with a strong performance at home.

A brilliant away win for our First Team, who put in an excellent performance to come away from Illies Reserves with a 6–2 victory.

Goals from David McLaughlin, Anthony Doherty, Patrick Doherty (2), Oran McDevitt and Ronan Shovlin secured all three points for John Grant’s side.

Rashenny were 2–0 up at half-time and continued to push on after the break, with Oran McDevitt adding a superb strike before Patrick Doherty rounded off the scoring with his second of the game.

Our Reserves were also on the scoresheet at Trawbreaga Park, with goals from George McGuinness and Abdul Al Rasheed, but a strong Glengad Reserves side came away with a 5–2 win.

Plenty of positives to take from the weekend, with the First Team continuing to build momentum and the Reserves looking to respond in their next outing.

WEEKEND FIXTURES

Our First Team are back in action under the lights this Saturday night as they host Gleneely Colts at Trawbreaga Park, with a 7:30pm kick-off.

John Grant’s side will be hoping to get their first points of the season on the board.

On Sunday morning, our Reserves travel to The Bay Field to take on Moville Reserves, with kick-off at 11:00am.

OJ Cuffe will be hoping for another strong performance as his side look to build on last weekend’s win.

Rashenny 4–5 Quigley’s Point Swifts Reserves

A frustrating night under the lights at Trawbreaga Park as Rashenny let a strong winning position slip against a very good QPS side.

Goals from Jake O’Donnell, Damien Friel, Patrick Doherty and Shane Gordon had Rashenny in control at 3–1, but a late push from the visitors saw them score four times and turn the game on its head.

Rashenny will be kicking themselves for not capitalising on the position they had worked themselves into and were unfortunate not to rescue a point with the final kick of the game, as a late penalty was missed.

John Grant’s side will now turn their attention to Saturday night’s game against Gleneely Colts as they look to get their first three points on the board.

Our First Team are in action on Wednesday night as they host Quigley’s Point Reserves at Trawbreaga Park.
The fixture was originally due to be played away on Sunday, but after being postponed it has now been reversed.

John Grant’s side will be looking to get their league campaign underway with a positive result.
