We all enjoy running. Running is a privilege

But there are those times that it can be tough, as and talks about on this week’s episode of the Any Given Runday podcast

Regardless of your fitness level, we all struggle during a half marathon or a marathon. There are times we want to quit, and there are times when we get lost in every race, not only having to be a PB, but whether we actually enjoyed ourselves or not is fully dependent on a PB

Some runners won’t make the start line of Dublin this year because of injury. And while you sacrifice a lot to get to the start line, don’t forget to take in a deep breath and enjoy the moment

“Running is a team sport” -

Especially now, with the nights getting darker and, despite the weather this week, it’s going to get colder, motivation will dip to get out for a run.

Finders by someone or a group for accountability and getting more enjoyment from your running can be a huge boost!

Whether that’s joining the local running club, finding similar people in your gym that are training for a race or even a Tryka/Hyrox or jumping in with a friend, running with people can make it so much easier to get out on days you don’t want to train

And if you’re training for the marathon, especially your first, running those long distances or even having friends jump in and out of segments of those long runs, can make the distance seem much more manageable!

On this week’s episode of the podcast, we review the Dublin Half Marathon with Dr Sarah Kelly and Helen Delaney as well as talking about all things running including marathon runners, motivation for running and much more

What a huge weekend coming up for half marathons around the country

Saturday:
Céide Coast Half Marathon
Rhode AC Half Marathon

Sunday:
Dublin Half Marathon
Belfast City Half Marathon
Athlone AC Half Marathon
Lahinch Half Marathon

With social media and hearing how “faster” runners are getting on, we probably have a preconceived notion of what we think an average time for a half marathon is

And it’s probably slower than you think!

Some of us have the benchmark time of 2 hours, but the average time is well over that, at 2:14 with a 6:21 per km pace

The average male is over two hours, with the average female at 2:16

Roughly 10% of runners are under 1:30, and like seeing a sub 3 hour marathon or sub 20 5k results online, it can seem like a lot more people break that 90 minute barrier

It doesn’t matter whether you’re going for a blistering PB time, pulling back to make sure you’re ok for the Dublin Marathon next month or aiming to finish your first half marathon using a run/walk method, 21.1km is 21.1km for all of us

Every pace has a place

Heart rate training done right

We’re at the stage of the marathon block where people may want to practice more marathon pace runs to see how the body holds up.

For some, that may mean training harder than heart rate zones, working harder than they would like in certain sessions to keep paces. For his HR lines up with his marathon pace effort and he’s able to push on in his training

Coached by our marathon coach this year, , learn more about how Francis is getting on going through the heart rate method in his marathon training, why he’s getting a second test by during his block and much more, in this week’s episode of the Any Given Runday podcast

It was fantastic to have as a guest co-host of the podcast this week as we get closer to the Dublin Marathon

Cliodhna was a part of our original Road To Dublin series last year, talking about her training leading to her first marathon.

Her running has only gone from strength to strength since, including the Limerick Marathon and PB’ing in several shorter races.

But, as she talks about in this reel, there’s something different about the build-up in training to a marathon

Hear more about Cliodhna’s journey on this week’s episode of the Any Given Runday podcast, as well as why she is running the Dublin Marathon this year in support of Make-A-Wish and the difference they make

progress seems to be going from strength to strength as he builds towards the Dublin Marathon using the Norwegian Singles Method, taking his marathon plan straight from a book

But he’s feeling injury free as he plans his next 6 weeks towards the Dublin Marathon. You can hear more about this on this week’s episode of the podcast and let us know in the comments your thoughts/experiences with the Norwegian Singles method
