12 noon KO yesterday saw AFC U15 Prem girls , lead by the ever vocal captain Lena , play host to Bearna Na Forbacha.
From the 1st whistle Athenry were focused, strong and determined to be the first on the score card, however it was Barna , from a corner kick that took the lead in the first 10mins of play. Athenry retaliated and pressed hard for the equalizer taking every opportunity , their constant solid defending , keeper when needed , midfield pressure and linking play with the front line saw Athenry gain the advantage leveling the game on the 20th minute with a goal from Sophie. C .
Game on.
Barna fought back and threatened but it was Athenry who ended the first half 2-1 with a second one coming from Róise before the whistle blew.
With the usual half time fuel on board and substitutions made , the Athenry girls came out and played the game wanting more. Barna were a threat at times but were unable to convert. Last minutes of play saw Athenry awarded 2 penalties, first one on 65th minute and the second one in the last minute of play. Both taken calmly and expertly by Róisín who had come back on for the last 15 minutes, beating the keeper both times and giving Athenry a 4-1 win.

Thanks to Barna for traveling and playing a good sporting game. A great team performance from every girl on the pitch .

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Larry Gavin, beloved father of our former chairman and coach Pat Gavin.

Larry was a much-loved grandfather to Matthew, Eoin and Amy, who played with the club, and Pat's wife Martina has also been a familiar and valued presence on our sidelines over the years.
Everyone at the club extends our deepest sympathies to Pat, Martina, Matthew, Eoin, Amy and all of the Gavin family at this very sad time.

St Bernard’s 2–3 Athenry

Athenry travelled to St Bernard’s today following last week’s league meeting between the sides.

Bernard’s started the stronger and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. Athenry had one great chance to equalise but couldn’t take it, going in 1–0 down at the break.

Athenry improved hugely in the second half and created some big chances to get back into the game, but just couldn’t find the finish. Bernard’s then caught Athenry on the break with a sucker punch to make it 2–0.

Athenry looked down and out, but slowly worked their way back into the game. A great effort from Mufaro Chindavata was blocked by the hand of a Bernard’s defender, resulting in a penalty and a red card, leaving Bernard’s with 10 men.

Shane Tomas stepped up and calmly stroked home a lovely penalty to make it 2–1 and game on.

Athenry continued to push for the equaliser and were rewarded when Harry O’Connell rose highest to power home a thumping header and send the game into extra time.

Extra time was nip and tuck, with both sides battling hard, but Harry O’Connell struck again to complete the comeback and send Athenry through to the next round. Harry also picked up Man of the Match for a fantastic performance. 👏

A brilliant comeback from the lads after being 2–0 down. Well done boys! ⚽️🇱🇻

U13 Girls Premier
Athenry 2-2 Ballinasloe

Following a narrow opening day defeat to Corrib Celtic, the u13A girls welcomed Ballinasloe to moanbaun. What followed was a very entertaining and physical encounter.

Midway through the first half Ballinasloe hit the front following a well worked corner routine. Shortly after Ruby Moloney rattled the crossbar for the home side. 0-1 at halftime. Athenry regrouped and a few tactical changes at halftime saw the home side get on top and Shortly after a lovely move down the left by Ava Morrissey and Kayleigh Quinn found Ruby Moloney on the edge of the box to find the back of the net.

10 minutes later the home side were dealt a blow when a long ball from the Ballinasloe defense looked to be dealt with by the home side with the Athenry defender getting a push in the back but the whistle didnt come and Ballinasloe finished the chance well.

Heading into the last few minutes Athenry went for broke and a lovely through ball by Amy Mooney found Sarah Murphy who fought off the Ballinasloe defender before calmly finishing into the bottom corner.

A fantastic display of football from both sides.
A brilliant performance by the entire squad but player of the match goes to Sarah Murphy for a tireless display.

GFA U13 Girls Division 2 Kilshanvey United 0-1 Athenry B. It was a great start to the season for Athenry B girls who dug out a great result away to a dogged and determined Kilshanvey United. As it was the first game of the season for both sides, the early exchanges in the first half lacked any real pattern but as the half wore on, Athenry began to get on top. The deadlock was eventually broken when a lovely ball over the top from Éadaoin Maughan was latched onto by Lily O'Connor who got in behind the defence. She made a lovely pass to Amy McGregor who made a great run and finished expertly. Kilshanvey came out in the second half determined to get back on terms but stout defending from a very solid backline, great covering in midfield aswell as a dominant display in goal by team captain Sarah O'Donoghue helped Athenry girls see out the win by the tightest of margins. Thanks to shirt sponsors Quinn.

The U13B boys kicked off their league campaign with a trip to Renmore early Saturday morning. Renmore started brightly and were rewarded for their early pressure with a goal inside the first 10 minutes. This was followed soon after by a neat move and finish to make it two. Athenry weren'tt deterred and pushed down the field with some good passing moves to come close from two corners and Danny Morrissey was unlucky not to score with the Renmore keeper pulling off a good save before the break.

Athenry came out again in the second half looking for their first goal but were twarted by a number of saves and close range efforts tailing wide. Renmore were dangerous on the break and so it proved by grabbing another 2 quick fire goals. Athenry with 15 minites to go broke free and a pinpoint pass from Sarah Murphy to Danny Morrissey was excellently finished to the net. The lads and girls put in a great effort against strong opposition and lots of positives can be taken from the performance.

Mervue Utd 3 Athenry 0

This was an evenly contested first half, in very windy conditions, however Mervue took the lead on 35mins from a 35 yards effort from Tommy Molloy. Athenry worked a couple of grest one-on-one chances forSean McCoy, but the Mervue keeper pulled off 2 super saves to deny Athenry.

Athenry, now with the elements im the 2nd half, ,put a lot of pressure on Mervue, but could find an equaliser. Mervue double their lead with a great 2nd goal when Tommy Molloy hammed home a pull back from thr bye line.
The game fjnished 3-0, after Aaron Molloy scored Mervue's on the 90 th minute
Not the result Athenry came for, but lots of positives to take from an away game in tough weather conditions.
