🤿 Good Instructors Are Ready to Change the Plan

Before entering the water, every dive instructor should have a clear idea of how to organize the students.

Where will you position yourself?
Where will your students be?
Can you keep everyone in sight?
Can you maintain control throughout the exercise?

But a plan that looks perfect on the surface doesn’t always work underwater.

Once you descend, you may realize that your original setup isn’t giving you the control you expected. The current may be different, visibility may be limited, or the positioning of your students simply may not work.

That’s when an instructor needs to think and adapt.

Change your position.
Reorganize your students.
Adjust the formation.
Create more space or bring everyone closer.

There is nothing wrong with changing your original plan. In fact, recognizing that something isn’t working and correcting it is an important part of becoming a better instructor.

During the SSI Instructor Training Courses at Oceans 5 Gili Air, we want candidates to understand why they choose a certain position or formation—not simply copy a standard setup.

Plan your dive. Observe your students. Stay in control. And adapt when necessary.

Because good teaching underwater isn’t about following a picture.

It’s about understanding what is happening around you. 🤿

🤿 Your Underwater Organization Should Never Be Automatic
As a dive instructor, you need to know why you place yourself and your students in certain positions.
Before entering the water, you make a plan. You think about visibility, communication, control and how you want the exercise to run.
But once underwater, you may see things differently.
Maybe your position doesn't give you the overview you expected. Maybe the distance between students is too large. Maybe one student needs more attention. Or maybe the environment simply requires a different approach.
That's the moment to reorganize.
Don't continue with a setup just because that's what you planned on the surface.
A strong instructor constantly reads the situation and asks:
Is this working?
Do I have control?
Can I make it better?
During the SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air, we encourage instructor candidates to make these decisions for themselves.
We don't teach instructors to stand in one particular place because “that's where an instructor should stand.”
We teach them to understand why that position works — and to recognize when it doesn't.
Because good organization isn't about following a fixed formation.
It's about creating the best position to teach, observe and stay in control. 🤿

Why Choose the SSI Instructor Training Course at Oceans 5 Gili Air? 🤿
Becoming a dive instructor is more than learning how to pass an Instructor Evaluation. It’s about learning how to teach real students in real diving situations.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air, our SSI Instructor Training Courses focus on creating confident, adaptable and professional dive instructors.
👥 Small Group Sizes
More personal attention, more time to practice, and more individual feedback from our Instructor Trainers.
🎥 Video Analysis
We record teaching sessions and analyze them together. See your positioning, communication, student control and demonstrations from a completely different perspective.
🌊 Realistic Teaching Techniques
We train for what happens after the course. Real students don’t always behave as expected, and real dive sites don’t always provide perfect training conditions.
⚖️ Neutral Buoyancy Skills
In open water, skills are taught and demonstrated neutrally buoyant whenever possible. An instructor should be able to control their own buoyancy while teaching and controlling students.
đźš« No Kneeling on the Seafloor
We don’t use the ocean floor as a classroom. Good buoyancy protects the marine environment and teaches future instructors to set the right example from day one.
🤙 Flexible Training
Every candidate is different. We adapt the training, provide extra practice where needed, and focus on helping each candidate develop into a better instructor.
We don't train you simply to pass the evaluation. We train you for the day after it.

Why Are We Teaching Divers to Hover Like Buddha? 🤿
We have all seen it during dive training: the Buddha hover, sitting upright in the water with crossed legs.
It might demonstrate that a diver can maintain neutral buoyancy, but there is one problem: this is not how we actually dive.
When we dive, we want to be horizontal, streamlined, neutrally buoyant and in control. So why shouldn't we teach students to hover in the same position they will actually use underwater?
During the SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) at Oceans 5 Gili Air, we focus on teaching skills in a realistic diving position. Instructor candidates learn how to demonstrate and teach hovering while maintaining a proper horizontal position.
Because instructor training shouldn't only prepare you to pass an evaluation.
It should prepare you to teach real divers in the real world.

🎓 SSI Instructor Training: Preparing You for Real-Life Teaching 🤿

The SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) is not only about learning the skills and handling the problems you might encounter during your SSI Instructor Evaluation.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, we want to prepare our instructor candidates for something even more important: real life as a dive instructor.

That is why video analysis is an important part of our SSI ITC. 🎥
During training sessions, we record our instructor candidates while they are teaching. Afterwards, we analyze the videos together.

We look at questions such as:
👉 How do you organize your students?
👉 Where do you position yourself?
👉 How do you communicate underwater?
👉 How do you recognize and solve problems?
👉 How do you work together with your Divemaster?
👉 Are your instructions clear and easy to understand?
👉 How can you make the whole experience safer, smoother and more enjoyable for your students?

Sometimes you don't realize what you are doing until you actually see yourself teaching on video.
Small details can make a huge difference.
Our goal isn't simply to help you pass the SSI Instructor Evaluation. Our goal is to help you become a confident, organized and professional dive instructor who is ready to teach real students in real diving situations.

Because passing your Instructor Evaluation is only the beginning of your career. 🌊

Train for the evaluation. Prepare for the real world. Become a better instructor.

TECH DIVING AT OCEANS 5 GILI AIR

TAKE YOUR DIVING BEYOND THE RECREATIONAL LIMITS

For many scuba divers, earning an Open Water certification is just the beginning of an incredible underwater journey. After completing Advanced Adventurer, Deep Diving, Nitrox, or Rescue Diver, many divers start wondering what lies beyond the recreational limits. What is it like to explore deeper reefs, spend longer underwater, or visit dive sites that recreational divers simply cannot reach?

The answer is technical diving, often called tech diving.

At Oceans 5 Gili Air, technical diving is more than simply diving deeper. It is about becoming a better, more disciplined, and highly skilled diver. Whether your goal is to explore deep reefs, prepare for scientific expeditions, photograph untouched marine life, or simply challenge yourself, technical diving opens an entirely new world beneath the surface.[1]
