‘Sea Cucumbers’ written by Nanda, AquaMarine Diving - Bali 2026 Zero-to-Hero PADI Divemaster Intern

Sea cucumbers, scientifically known as Holothuroidea, are fascinating marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echinodermata.
They are characterised by their elongated, cylindrical bodies with leathery skin and a soft, gelatinous interior. Unlike their close relatives, such as sea stars and sea urchins, sea cucumbers lack spines and have a more cylindrical shape. Depending on the species, they can range in size from a few centimetres to over a metre in length.
Sea cucumbers play crucial ecological roles in marine ecosystems. They are scavengers and detritivores, feeding on organic matter and helping to recycle nutrients on the ocean floor.
They also contribute to sediment turnover and help maintain the health of coral reefs and other marine habitats.
Because of their impact on marine ecosystems, sea cucumbers are often referred to as “ecosystem engineers” — small creatures that play an important role in keeping the ocean healthy. 🌊💙
