You may have noticed that over the weekend there was an earthquake in Flores, better known as the region where Komodo lies.
The earthquake measured 7.0 on the Richter scale, making it a substantial one. The nature of the tectonic plates here means quakes are often quite shallow — something that magnifies their impact.
BlueWater Express itself lies far enough away to not be impacted directly by the quake itself. However, it has impacted our team hugely.
We have several staff members who come from Flores and have been working with us to grow and develop their careers. Some of these staff, far from home, have received news of damage to property and possessions. Tragically, some have even lost family members.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected. We will be sharing some links shortly to help raise funds for those impacted, and we will also be supporting local groups on the ground aiding the region's recovery.

August is peak season in the Gili Islands, and unlike a lot of places where that just means more crowds and higher prices, here it actually means the islands are at their best.
The turtle population around all three islands is as active as it gets all year. If you’ve been thinking about going, August is a very good time to stop thinking.

This is not a filter. This is what the water looks like in the Gili Islands in July. Visibility runs 15 to 20 metres in dry season. The reef is intact.
The turtles are there every day, west reef at Gili T, east reef at Gili Air, both accessible without a dive cert. The reef sharks cruise the deeper sections off the north point. This is just what is in the water here.

Kuta Lombok isn't Kuta Bali, and in July that's exactly the point 🏄
The south coast picks up the southwest swell, making it one of Indonesia's better spots for intermediate surfers this time of year.
Selong Belanak is the beginner-friendly wave: long, gentle, consistent. Mawun is the quieter beach nearby. Gerupuk Bay has boat-access breaks for the more experienced.
