The main benefit of whey protein is actually that it’s processed to make it a more concentrated or isolated form of the EAA’s (essential amino acids) your body needs for things like muscle protein synthesis and other bodily processes.
Whey Isolate (more processed to remove even more fat, lactose etc) and Concentrate (still heavily processed but not quite as much, contains a little more fat and lactose and is generally cheaper) contain good amounts off all 9 EAA’s.
Reputable brands will show on the label of the product (usually on the back) the amino acid breakdown which gives you a pretty good idea of how effective it will be for building muscle etc. Leucine content is VERY important for example.
If a protein powder doesn’t show that, and is combined with lower quality sources of protein like collagen, which don’t move the needle for MPS, it should be cheaper than whey alone.
If supplementing with collagen, most of the ‘potential’ benefit comes from between 5-15g per day (only 1 tsp or tbsp).
Whey/collagen blends without disclosing how much is whey is a pass for me. Scam is a bit of a strong word because it might actually be a good blend, but transparency is king.
Dates vs Donuts?
To play devil’s advocate for these kids, you can get all the protein and most of the micronutrients you need from animal based sources (steak, liver, eggs etc) and fruits (I’m not sure if fruits are oestrogen maxxing as well).
But it’s going to be quite hard to get a sufficient amount of fibre, potassium, magnesium, polyphenols etc from that list alone.
One video they said they spend $3000 on groceries a month (so almost $700 a week or $100 a day) which I’m not sure if it’s just engagement bait. 😂 For one person that’s wild.
Vegetables aren’t bad for you and they won’t destroy your testosterone. Eat a varied and diverse diet and your gut will thank you for it.

Simple messages win social media. It creates easy to follow advice and camps and makes people feel wrong for questioning things.
When people realise advice isn’t completely true and oversimplified (calories are all that matter or whole foods are all that matter), they tend to go to the complete other end of the spectrum as a natural reaction. I don’t blame them.
When I’m giving advice, I try to make it simple enough to be practical, but not so simple that it misses any nuance or context. But also if you over explain, you lose 80% of people’s interest and their ability to do anything with the information, so there’s a fine art to coaching/teaching people in a way that lands for them.
