In just over five weeks, Dragons will be getting ready for the 2026 Edinburgh Cup in Cowes. One team from the Netherlands is looking forward to taking part again.

Jacob Roosjen has sailed a Dragon since 2000. Over the years, Jacob's Silver Swan has participated in numerous regattas in Europe: in the Netherlands, in Ostend, Douarnenez, St.Tropez, Kühlungsborn, Flensburg, Skagen and Cowes.

On being asked why he entered the Edinburgh Cup this year, he replied: “We are very much looking forward to meeting the international Dragon class family in Cowes this year, where the Edinburgh Cup will take place. It is the second time for us to participate in this prestigious event. The first time was in 2023, when two Dutch Dragons came all the way from the Netherlands to Cowes. Quite a journey, but certainly worthwhile the effort we’ve put into it.

“The friendly atmosphere on the Isle of Wight, the good sailing conditions and the fantastic socials during the event have triggered us to go for it once more. We truly feel privileged to enter the grounds of the famous Royal Yacht Squadron, surrounded by the impressive collection of silver trophies, commemorating the regattas of the past. Traditions are still held high at the RYS, hosting the 2026 Edinburgh Cup and where the prizegiving dinner takes place.”

We asked Jacob what has been his favourite regatta so far. He couldn't pick just one; “To me the international character of the races is very appealing. In my top three I would certainly put The Edinburgh Cup in Cowes in 2023, the Worlds in Medemblik in 2019 and the Gold Cup in Skagen in 2009, a Royal event with two Royal Danish participants.”

Fun Fact
In 2009, during the Europeans in Saint-Tropez, there were 110 participants and the fleet was split into four subgroups. This inspired Jacob to introduce and sponsor a new award, a special Silver Cup for the Dragon Gold Cup Series.

Jacob’s passion for sailing, art and antique silver (he is a specialist in antique silver and a silver dealer by profession) was merged together to form the Silver Cup.
It is a large pure Swedish silver bowl from 1917, which he had painted in vibrant colours by Diana Roig, a Dutch/ Argentinian artist, reflecting the colours of the spinnakers. The trophy was awarded to the Dragon team who won the Silver Fleet, or now who finish in the middle of the entire Gold Cup fleet.

We are excited to welcome Jacob and his team to Cowes.
