Essential Braking Techniques for Steep Descents ⛰️
Riding long descents often leads to a common issue: realizing you're going too fast before a turn, instinctively grabbing the brakes, and causing the rear wheel to fishtail. Most downhill crashes stem from poor timing or incorrect braking force.
Keep these three principles in mind:
🔹 Slow down before entering the turn
Reduce your speed to a safe level on the straightaway and avoid braking while in the curve. Using the front brake in a turn can cause the bike to slide out sideways, while using the rear brake can cause the tail to fishtail.
🔹 Prioritize the front brake; use the rear as a supplement
The front wheel provides grip, while the rear wheel ensures stability. Since your center of gravity naturally shifts forward on a descent, the front brake offers stronger stopping power, while the rear brake helps keep the tail from swinging wildly.
🔹 Don't hold the brake continuously
Holding the brake constantly on a long descent causes the brake pads to overheat, leading to a significant drop in stopping power. Use "pulsed braking"—squeezing and releasing intermittently—to allow the brakes to cool down; this ensures a steadier and safer ride.
