Background
In the Wing Chun world, there exists a common opinion that what we call “Ip Man” Wing Chun and “Gulao” Wing Chun are two distinctive boxing systems. If we explore this in depth more, both methods are the essence of Dr Leung Jan’s Wing Chun system. They are two sides of the same coin. In other words, the Wing Chun system taught by Dr Leung Jan (1825-1894) in Foshan and Heshan can be said to be the complete integration of the two “styles”.

I have been most fortunate to train for 20 years with Sifu Chow Tze Chuen, a disciple of Ip Man in the 1950s. I also learnt the Gulao style through private lessons from Sifu Fung Keung for over ten years. He was the son of Master Fung Chun, who learnt from Wong Wah Sam, a student of Dr Leung Jan in Heshan.

Course Outline & Objective
The objective of this course is to dispel the misconceptions that “Ip Man” Wing Chun and “Gulao” Wing Chun are two distinctive styles by analyzing:

· the relationship between frontal and angled stances through boxing principles (拳訣);
· the relationship between frontal and angled stances through hand techniques;
· the shoulder serves as the meridian in the angled stance (偏身以膊為子午);
· the key techniques for close-range striking and entering.

This course will cover Gulao’s twelve separate techniques, their partner exercises and their association with the three empty-hand forms and one wooden dummy form represented by Ip Man.

Recently, some of my students ask me the meaning behind the IWCO logo. I am pleased to furnish the meaning

Firstly, although it is not true, it is commonly recognized that Ng Mui is the founder of Wing Chun. The literal meaning of “Ng Mui” is five plum-blossoms. So, the logo is embodied with five plum-blossoms. It is to memorize the ancestors of our Wing Chun martial art. In my humble opinion, Wing Chun is not founded by one person. It is inherited the traditional Chinese short-strike martial art. So, this five plum-blossoms are a collective commemoration of our Wing Chun ancestors whom had passed down such a treasure to us. It is not just to memorize the founder. “Ng Mui” (Five plum-blossoms) is a kind of symbol to represent our Wing Chun ancestors.

Secondly, B**g Sau is one of the three fist-seeds of Wing Chun. Tan Sau, B**g Sau and F**k Sau are the fist-seeds of Wing Chun. According to GMM Ip Man, these three techniques already include the countless changes of Wing Chun hand techniques. In other words, all Wing Chun hand techniques come from the B**g Sau, Tan Sau and F**k Sau. Since B**g Sau is the icon of Wing Chun, B**g Sau is used in the logo.

Thirdly, the wrist part of the B**g Sau touches the dummy arm. Actually, it does not mean to show a stationary movement. It means to show the transitional movement for making the zig-zag stepping, which is one of the key strategic combative footwork in Wing Chun. Footwork is implicitly included in this logo. (The key strategic combative footwork in Wing Chun is Zig-zag, Outward-inward steps and center-through step).

So, ancestors, hand technique and footwork are the elements in this logo.
