🚗 How much can today’s automotive R&I contribute to reducing tomorrow’s road-transport energy consumption?
Although the LeMesurier project has come to an end, its research continues to generate impact — with our latest work now published as part of the EARPA Form Forum 2025 book by Springer Nature.
Our chapter explores the potential impact of technologies developed within the 2ZERO Partnership on the energy consumption of future battery and fuel-cell electric vehicles. The study integrates these technological advances into COPERT/SIBYL, enabling their potential contribution to reducing energy consumption across European road transport to be quantified — with projections indicating up to an additional 2% reduction by 2050.
A great example of how collaborative European R&I can translate technological innovation into measurable impact for the future of sustainable mobility.

Can different pathways lead to the same CO₂ outcome?
Our recent open-access publication, “Alternative Passenger Car Fleet Decarbonisation Pathways in Europe”, explores how different fleet mixes, vehicle use patterns and CO₂ trajectories perform under the proposed changes to European legislation.
📌 Different pathways can reach similar CO₂ outcomes and the Automotive Package provides flexibility to pursue electrification through multiple technology options.
📌 Affordable PEV & PREV/PHEV options will accelerate electrification by enabling faster replacement of vehicles
📌 PREV/PHEV–PEV Mix scenario is an alternative provided that PREVs/PHEVs operate mainly on grid electricity & biofuels
📌 Policy design matters: lighter vehicles, small fuel tanks, targeted taxation, public awareness, regulatory safeguards, and financial incentives can promote high electric driving shares.
The outcome ➡️With appropriate usage and supportive policies, PREVs/PHEVs can complement PEVs while remaining aligned with long-term climate goals.

The team’s paper “How effective is the collection of particles for reducing the non-exhaust emission footprint of road transport? An LCA and CBA analysis for EU light-duty vehicles and fleets” presented at last year’s 2025 – FISITA Conference has received the Outstanding Paper Award 2026 for Regulatory and Sustainability Impact.
The paper evaluates the environmental impact of a typical disc brake system used in average European passenger cars with the addition of a brake wear emission filtration device by conducting a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The health benefits and cost effectiveness of the filtration system are also examined via a Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA). The findings aim to bridge the gap between emission-reduction technologies and lifecycle sustainability, supporting policy decisions in Europe for non-exhaust emissions in road transport.
This study was supported by the European Parliament and the European Commission DG GROW under the study “Brake wear emissions: PP012101 Pilot project—Feasibility study on reduction of traffic-related particulate emissions by means of vehicle mounted fine dust filtration” (No 060.50616).

The German heat was relentless. So were the transport disruptions.
Yet neither was enough to discourage the transport community from coming together!
A big shout-out to everyone who made this year's such a valuable gathering for our community.
Our own Professor Zissis Samaras chaired the ATTI Forum panel discussion, "Euro 7 compliance requirements – challenges and industry preparedness." Together with experts from across the automotive sector, the discussion explored how the evolving Euro 7 framework is reshaping vehicle development, the implementation challenges facing OEMs and suppliers, the increasing testing requirements, and the industry's readiness for the new regulation.
At e:misia, we believe that progress starts with open dialogue. Bringing together researchers, industry and regulators is how ideas are challenged, knowledge is shared, and better solutions emerge.
Sometimes the steps forward are small. Sometimes they redefine the road ahead.
