# # # The Evolution of Transition Basketball in the EuroLeague
**2016–17 to 2025–26**
At NOSTOS, one of our core objectives is to provide a platform for the knowledge, research and professional work of our associates.
Today, we are pleased to feature an original study by our associate **Ioannis Lekos, Basketball Coach & Performance Analyst**, examining how transition basketball has evolved across **10 EuroLeague seasons**.
Through an analysis of **Transition Frequency, Transition Efficiency (PPP), Pace, Defensive Rebound% and Steal%**, Ioannis explores a fundamental question in modern European basketball:
**The EuroLeague is getting faster — but does running more actually lead to winning more?**
The findings provide an interesting answer.
EuroLeague basketball has become progressively faster and increasingly transition-oriented. Transition Frequency rose significantly in recent seasons, reaching **9.33% in 2025–26**, while Pace also reached its highest level of the period examined.
However, greater transition volume did **not** translate into greater efficiency.
And perhaps the most important finding:
**The best teams do not necessarily run more. They run better.**
Across the 10 seasons studied, Top 4 and playoff teams did not separate themselves through substantially higher Pace or Transition Frequency. Their advantage appeared instead in **better Transition Efficiency and stronger Defensive Rebounding**.
This distinction between **volume and efficiency** offers an important perspective for coaches and performance analysts: increasing the number of transition opportunities alone may not create competitive advantage. What matters is the quality with which those opportunities are generated and executed.
Excellent analytical work by **Ioannis Lekos**, bringing together data, tactical interpretation and performance analysis to examine how the modern EuroLeague game is evolving.

THE ASSISTANT COACH: MORE THAN A SUPPORTING ROLE
The modern assistant coach is not simply a secondary figure on the bench. He is an active extension of the head coach and an integral part of a high-performance coaching staff.
A well-structured staff gives assistant coaches clearly defined responsibilities across three major areas: practice, game preparation and ex*****on, and off-court planning.
During practice, assistants should be actively involved—observing from different angles, leading specific parts of the session, working individually with players, contributing to offensive and defensive development, and monitoring performance indicators.
During games, their role becomes equally important. Assistants can monitor opponent tendencies, matchups, fouls, timeouts and special situations, contribute during timeouts and breaks, and provide the head coach with carefully filtered information.
Many eyes, but one voice.
Scouting is another fundamental responsibility. Effective preparation combines opponent scouting with self-scouting, using video, player profiles, tactical analysis and specific performance indicators. The objective is not to overwhelm players with information, but to provide exactly what they need to recognize situations, react quickly and execute effectively.
Above all, successful coaching staffs are built on communication, trust, clearly defined roles and shared responsibility. A strong assistant coach should never be simply a “yes man.” He should contribute, observe, question, support and grow—while understanding that the final responsibility and direction belong to the head coach.
The stronger the collaboration within the coaching staff, the stronger the environment around the team.
