Once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee it.
IRONIKA (or about a deca-dance) is finally online.
The sequel to HYSTERICA, and another chapter in my collaboration with the magical Francesca Kezich—one of those rare artists who do not merely create sets, but build complete parallel worlds, fighting independently to keep them alive.
After a night of unbridled dancing and bittersweet dreams, a Dionysian feast dissolves into a baroque living room. The survivors of the party awaken as chthonic, carnivalesque creatures. Human and non-human bodies melt into a primordial yet shimmering organism, balancing somewhere between birth and decay, punishment and salvation, tragedy and comedy.
Irony remains the bittersweet flavour of the afterparty—and perhaps the only tool left for surviving the impending nihilism of an increasingly deserted present.
IRONIKA was brought to unstable life in Athens by Quantum Body Athens Butoh Dance Group and an entire constellation of independent artists. It is the result of bodies, labour, costumes, objects, music, imagination, time, care and a considerable amount of collective madness.
Like most of our performances, it was open to the public on a voluntary-contribution basis.
Because culture is not only what gets selected, funded and stamped with an official logo. It is also what grows independently beneath a city, vibrating under its ground and insisting on creating worlds even when nobody has paid for them to exist.
There is another kind of hunger.
A hunger to create.
We swim against the current.
Sweat is our salvation.
Consider this a small transmission from the Athenian underground to the Greek Ministry of Culture.
Something like this exists in Athens.
