President's XIII and University of Cambridge Rugby League Deliver Another Memorable Chapter in Ghana Tour

The Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club Ghana Tour continued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, with another captivating international fixture as the visitors took on the President's XIII at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.

Following their opening matches against the University of Ghana Rugby League team, Cambridge faced a different challenge in the President's XIII—the national representative side of Rugby League Federation Ghana. The squad is assembled from standout players competing in the ongoing RLFG Championship, alongside talent from universities and rugby league communities across the country, showcasing the depth and quality of Ghana's growing rugby league landscape.

The fixture marked the third international appearance for the President's XIII, following previous encounters against Oxford University Rugby League in 2023 and Roots Rugby USA in 2025. As Ghana's national representative side, the President's XIII provides players with an opportunity to compete against international opposition while demonstrating the progress of the domestic game and the pathways being created for players across the country.

Played at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, the contest was fiercely competitive from the opening whistle. Cambridge University settled into the game quickly, with Owen Hanford crossing for the opening try in the 10th minute before Ben Rose added the conversion, giving the visitors an early 6–0 lead.

Cambridge continued to apply pressure as Stevie Vass crossed for another try in the 40th minute. Ben Rose was again successful from the kicking tee moments later, extending Cambridge's advantage to 12–0 heading into halftime.

Despite trailing, the President's XIII returned for the second half with renewed determination. Cambridge struck first after the restart, with Sam McCleery scoring in the 43rd minute before Ben Rose converted to push the score to 18–0.

The Ghanaian side refused to back down. Tim Abdullai crossed for the President's XIII's first try of the afternoon in the 50th minute. Adams narrowly missed the conversion attempt, leaving the score at 18–4 as the home side continued to fight their way back into the contest.

Cambridge responded in the 70th minute through Fred Fernley, whose try extended the visitors' lead to 22–4 after Ben Rose was unable to add the conversion.

With the match entering its closing stages, the President's XIII continued to battle until the final whistle. Jonathan Adotey crossed for a late try in the 76th minute, and Adams Marsuu successfully converted moments later to bring the final score to 22–10.

While Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club claimed their second successive win of the Ghana Tour, the result told only part of the story.

For the President's XIII, the fixture represented another important milestone in Ghana's rugby league journey. Facing quality international opposition allowed the national representative side to test itself against an established university programme while giving players invaluable experience at the international level.

For Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club, the victory marked another successful chapter of a tour that has been about far more than results. Through competition, cultural exchange and meaningful partnerships, the tour continues to strengthen the relationship between Ghanaian rugby league and one of the world's oldest university rugby league programmes.

As the final whistle sounded, both teams came together in the true spirit of rugby league, proving once again that while results matter, the lasting legacy of the Cambridge University Rugby League Ghana Tour lies in the friendships forged, the experiences shared, and the continued growth of the sport across borders.

With one final fixture remaining, Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club will now face the Ghana Leopards on Sunday in what promises to be a fitting conclusion to a historic tour—one that has celebrated competition, connection and the bright future of rugby league in Ghana.
