The Secret Libraries of Timbuktu That Held Ancient African Knowledge
My dear brothers and sisters, imagine a city where knowledge was more valuable than gold. Let me take you to the dusty streets of Timbuktu in the heart of the Mali Empire, centuries ago.
By the 14th and 15th centuries, Timbuktu had become one of the most important intellectual centers in the world. At the heart of this city stood the Sankore Mosque and its associated university, surrounded by family homes that doubled as libraries. Here, African scholars — along with students from across the Sahara — studied and preserved thousands upon thousands of handwritten manuscripts.
These were not ordinary books. The libraries of Timbuktu contained works on astronomy, mathematics, medicine, law, history, poetry, and Islamic philosophy. African scholars wrote original treatises on topics ranging from the movement of stars to advanced surgical techniques and ethical governance. Families carefully copied and protected these manuscripts across generations, passing down wisdom that reflected deep African thought and observation of the natural world.
When times grew dangerous — from colonial threats to later conflicts — the people of Timbuktu did something remarkable. They hid these precious manuscripts in wooden chests, buried them in the desert sand, or concealed them within the walls of their homes. Thousands of these ancient documents survived because ordinary families chose to protect them with their lives.
This is the Africa that existed long before outsiders claimed we had no written history — a continent of scholars, thinkers, and knowledge keepers who valued learning as the highest form of wealth.

My dear brothers and sisters, gather close with open hearts. Today, I want to shine light on the brave sons and daughters of Africa whose names were deliberately buried — warriors who looked powerful European armies in the eye and sent them retreating.
Let me introduce you to a few of these legends.
First, there was Samori Ture, the great Mandinka leader of the Wassoulou Empire in West Africa. For nearly 18 years in the late 1800s, he fought the French colonial forces with brilliant guerrilla tactics. He built a modern army, manufactured his own weapons, and repeatedly outmaneuvered the French. Even when they captured him, his spirit of resistance inspired generations.
Then came the legendary Battle of Adwa in 1896. When Italian forces tried to colonize Ethiopia, Emperor Menelik II united his people and led over 100,000 Ethiopian warriors against a heavily armed European army. On March 1st, in a single day, the Ethiopians crushed the Italians in one of the most decisive victories of an African army over a European colonial power in history. Ethiopia remained the only African nation never colonized.
And who can forget King Cetshwayo kaMpande of the Zulu Kingdom? In 1879, at the Battle of Isandlwana, his 20,000 Zulu warriors — armed mostly with spears and shields — defeated a superior British force equipped with rifles and artillery. It remains one of the worst defeats the British Army ever suffered at the hands of an indigenous force.
These warriors remind us that Africa did not surrender easily. Our ancestors were strategic geniuses, courageous protectors, and fierce defenders of their land and freedom.
Their stories were hidden so we would doubt our own strength. But today, we remember. We honor. We rise.
