We shouldn’t TEACH babies to swim!!

We should OBSERVE them swimming.

Because from birth, they can!

OBSERVE
Their innate desires. Their curiosity to lick the water, face plant and splash. Their natural reflexes which move and propel them. Be in awe of their amphibian kick and breath hold.

Baby is not an empty sponge waiting for us, the adult to fill them up.

OH NO!

Their brains are already full of every neurone they need for life. Our babies world is a sensory world, they constantly touch, taste and feel their way through. Their bodies move, their eyes gaze and they’re hearing is fully formed, they can even recognise their mothers voice at birth.

It is every day experiences that helps build their brain connections. The ones that have been repeated and those formed through emotional imprints (which can be positive and negative), these are the ones that fire and wire together.

It is not US the parent or US the swim instructor that TEACHES the baby to swim.

OH NO!

In fact babies teach themselves.
They are little scientists at heart.
Experimenting.
Feeling.
Sensing.
Questioning.
Yes, all unconsciously at first, but nether the less the brain is primed to learn.

So what can we do for our babies in the water?

ALLOW
1. Allow your baby to explore.
2. Give them freedom to move in the water in their own time and own way. You may have to adjust how you are softly supporting them.
3. Don’t push, pull, take control.

When we ALLOW, the brain will be in FLOW. When the brain is in flow, learning will take place naturally.

In the attempt of being the TEACHER .... not intentionally of course, but you maybe actually be hindering the natural process of the mind and body swimming connection.

It’s a little mind shift.
Are you ready?
It’s not as easy as 1,23.... unless you allow it to be.

Shift your control and observe baby, because they are masters at swimming naturally.

Hello Tiddlers!
We have had the news we have been anxiously anticipating...pools have been given the go-ahead to reopen from 25th July! Woohooo!!!

As you can imagine with all the new (and regularly changing!) guidance, training updates and risk assessments required to open with the 'new normal' it is taking Carol, Naiomi and the CSSS Family considerable time to collate and collaborate with all our venues.

All staff are furloughed so the office continues to remain closed so we are unable to respond to emails until we have finalised a return.

DW Derby, Halifax and Nottingham venues and The Mount, York have been confirmed for September restart.

We will keep you all posted as soon as we have confirmed dates with all other venues. The target to reopen is mid-August and we will make contact with swimmers at each venue regarding new structures and procedures.

A huge thank you to you all for your patience, kind words and support during this incredibly difficult time.

We will see you all again...back in the water...very soon!!!
Warm wishes
Carol, Naiomi & CSSS Family 🧜‍♀️
