Last weekend was very busy with track and field competitions but some other competitions still took place for distance runners.

On Friday night Toby Payne (17.38), Freddie Clayton (18.06), Sebastian Brown (20.09) and Harriet Brown (20.22) all took part in the Evensplits 5k race on the University of York cycle circuit. On the same evening Dave Lancaster was 2nd vet 65 in the Walkington 10k in 46.04.

Saturday saw another BMC at Watford with Angus Millan running 3.48.30 in the 1500m and Archie Lawson 1.51.53 in the 800m.

Mark Bolland-Cage earned another England vest at the Shrewsbury 5k to come 5th in the Vet 35 category with 15.56.

At parkrun over the weekend there were 1st places for Will Torgerson at Fountains Abbey in 16.54, Tim Pattison with 17.55 at Macclesfield and Joel Hutchinson with 19.18 at Dalby Forest. There were veteran age group wins for Dave Lancaster, Mike Raynes and Jon Blake with a junior age group win for Josh Reid. Lucas Leslie and Charlie Fairlamb were 1st and 2nd at the York Junior parkrun with Josephine Lowson being 1st girl.

On Tuesday evening the popular Golden Acre Park relay took place just north of Leeds. The relay involves 3 legs of 2.6 miles for seniors and older juniors with 3 legs of 1 mile for the younger juniors on an undulating parkland course. The club fielded 9 teams in total with 7 in the senior race and 2 in the junior one. The junior girls team of Hannah Lovett, Indoe Proudlove and Marianne Lowson won the junior girls category by just over a minute from Leeds City with the b and c teams coming 3rd and 4th. The junior boys team were 2nd in their category and 7th overall as Oscar Walker, George Ghosh and Benjamin Walker found the Valley Striders junior team a bit too strong with the junior boys b and c teams coming 3rd and 5th respectively in the category. The male vets team was 23rd in the age group competition. In the junior relay Nye Williams, Harper Newcombe and Scarlet Bycroft were 1st in the ‘older girls’ category with the club’s ‘older mixed’ team coming 2nd.

UPPER YDL 3 – Sunday 12th July 2026.

While it wasn't quite the intense heat the athletes endured a few days ago at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham, it was a beautiful, sunny day in Hull with just a light breeze—perfect for some brilliant athletics.

The morning threw a bit of timetable confusion our way, but the team was completely unfazed and dug deep to secure crucial points right from the off.

Showing true team spirit, Bind noticed an empty spot in the Shot Put and ran across to make sure we fielded an athlete. Watson and Hopkins followed that fantastic example, both volunteering to throw a Javelin each for the cause!

On the track, we saw a brilliant return to action by Tabitha Speight in the 100m, clocking a fantastic new PB of 13.47 seconds (wind TBC).

The personal bests kept tumbling throughout the day (all wind readings TBC), including:
🦘 Summer Barnard: Long Jump – 5.17m
(achieved with a brilliant crowd clap! 😉)
🚀 Tom Davey: 1500m – 4:15.32
🔥 Ruby Lee: 200m – 27.12s
🎉 Nina Hopkins: 400m – 59.62s
🥇 Alfie Howard: 800m – 2:09.80
👀 Ben Walker: A superb middle-distance double! 800m – 2:02.24 & 1500m – 4:13.57
🏃🏻‍♀️ Eleanor Walsh: 800m – 2:23.40
🥏 Matilda Wright: Discus – 38.50m

A massive thank you to Daniel Cluderay, who saved the day by arriving with ice lollies for everyone—an incredibly kind gesture that was much appreciated by the whole squad!

To all of our parents and athletes, thank you so much for your incredible support and for being such a fantastic, cohesive team. You are all amazing.

And the absolute best bit? We won the match!

Liverpool and the YDL National Final, here we come!
💚🖤

The sixth and final race in the York 10k road race league took place at Wistow near Selby on Tuesday night. Although the flat course should produce fast times a headwind from 6k onwards put paid to any serious PB attempts.

Laura Thompson successfully defended her overall league title with her 4th win in succession as she got the better of Pickering’s Josie Rawes by 14 seconds to win in 37.54. Chrissie Dover completed her domination of the vet 45 category winning again in 40.29 to come 9th overall. Chrissie also came 6th in the overall senior race. Sadly the lack of a 4th counter meant the women didn’t complete a team for the 2nd race in a row, however, the club did come 5th in the series ranking.

Will Torgerson ran a PB of 34.33 to come 4th overall. This completed a good series for Will as he came 2nd overall. Next home from the club was Tim Pattison in 12th in 36.16 as he was 2nd vet 35 on the night and 1st overall in the age group. Matt Boyle completed a good first series in the league to come 14th in 36.20 with Tim Day (41.44) narrowly finishing ahead of Jon Blake (41.46) as they came 82nd and 84th. Mike Raynes (43.36) completed the team in 108th with the club coming 7th on the day. John Blake came 2nd in the vet 60 age group with James Wisbey and Luke Haynes coming 5th and 6th in the senior category. After a good start in the team contest the club faded to joint 4th in the overall series.

In middle distance track racing news seven members went to Trafford on Tuesday night to take part in the BMC track races. Mark Bolland-Cage ran a PB and vet 35 club record in the 3000m with 8.49.32. Tom Davey also ran a PB with 9.04.36 with Katy Wood running her 2nd fastest 3000m with 9.23.98. In the 1500m Oscar Walker ran a PB of 4.18.41. In the 800m Gianluca Mastrolonardo ran 1.50.88 with Archie Lawson running 1.52.34 and Oskar Fraser-Krauss 1.57.18.

The fifth race in the York 10k Road Race League took place on a sweltering evening in Bugthorpe last night. This course is tough enough with its hills without the additional problem of 30oC temperatures. Not surprisingly the turnout was down with times being 3 or 4 minutes slower than in the previous race on the Knavesmire with some runners struggling more than this. Anyway enough of the excuses and onto the race itself.

Laura Thompson won her 3rd race in a row in the series in 40.49 nearly a minute ahead of York Acorn’s Charlotte Bush. Chrissie Dover was 3rd overall and 1st vet 45 in 43.03 as she defied the difficult conditions better than most. For the first time in the series the women didn’t complete a team so fingers crossed for a good turnout in the last race at Wistow in 2 weeks time.

The men were missing a whole host of runners which at least gave the club stalwarts a chance to count in the team that came 8th. Tim Pattison led the club home in 13th place in 39.15 but strangely was 6th vet 35 in a category that he is leading overall. James Wisbey found the going tough in 19th place in 40.21 as he had just returned from holiday in China. Mike Raynes (45.33) had his best run in the series to pass Jon Blake (46.46) at the 6k mark on the long descent. Jon was 2nd vet 60 but needs to run the last race of the series to count in the overall series category. John Lewis (51.53) and Kevin Hind (56.23) both enjoyed making the team.

The last race is back on the flat at Wistow near Selby so let’s hope the weather cools off and we get some fast times and a good turnout from the club.

In other distance running news Mark Bolland-Cage broke his PB and club vet 35 club record by running 4.07.60 for the 1500m at Trafford last night.

22/06/2026

A much quieter week for distance running.

Will Hardy ran a PB of 1.53.28 at last Wednesday’s BMC meeting in Birmingham. This followed on from his PB of 3.56.48 over 1500m the week before.

On Sunday Dave Lancaster was 1st vet 65 in the Fountains 10k in 48.20.

There were 28 runners from the club doing parkrun over the weekend. Angus McMillan took 20 seconds off his own course record at Ganavan Sands in Scotland as he ran 15.19. Chrissie Dover came 1st at Heslington in 19.37 with Sophie Robertson-Dover coming 2nd in 20.09. James Tucker was 1st on the Knavesmire in 15.52 with Will Torgerson coming 2nd at Fountains Abbey in 17.02. There were junior age group wins for Lucas Leslie, Freddie Clayton and Josephine Lowson with veteran age group wins for Jon Blake, Laura Thompson and Dave Lancaster. Thomas Douthwaite came 1st in the York junior parkrun with Leilani Adams and Elodie Adams being 2nd and 3rd girls.
