York RI U12 Girls earned their first win of the season on Saturday with a deserved 2–1 victory over Wigginton U12 Girls in a competitive and entertaining game at home.
After the battling performance against Thirsk the previous week, RI were able to welcome back a full complement of substitutes this time around, giving the girls the chance to maintain plenty of energy throughout the match — and every player made a valuable contribution.
The game started evenly, with both teams competing well and neither side able to take control in the opening stages.
At the back, MT, DF, EM and IA, gave RI a really solid platform. MT made a number of excellent clearances and interceptions, while DF produced an outstandingly assured performance, tracking runners, winning tackles and linking well with the midfield whenever the opportunity arose. IA was equally composed, getting stuck into challenges while also looking to bring the ball out of defence when possible.
CA continued her development in goal after only taking up the position this season. She looked increasingly confident, made several good saves and clearances and, importantly, could be heard communicating with the defence throughout the game.
In midfield, BP, OS, ER, GW and EH worked extremely well together. BP contributed at both ends of the pitch, making important tackles before driving forward with the ball and looking for passes into the attacking players. EH made several positive runs from midfield and regularly looked to bring teammates into the game, while OS once again provided plenty of energy and determination in the centre.
That attacking intent soon brought the breakthrough.
A ball forward released OS, who reacted quickest and drove towards goal. Despite having defenders chasing her down, she showed excellent strength to hold them off before producing another powerful finish to put RI 1–0 ahead — continuing her excellent goalscoring form from the previous two matches.
Ahead of the midfield, AH once again played an important role leading the line, holding the ball up, putting pressure on the Wigginton defence and stretching the game with her movement. Her ability to occupy defenders created space for RI's midfielders to make runs beyond her.
RI continued to look dangerous and almost doubled their lead from a corner. The ball dropped invitingly to MT inside the area and, with perhaps more time than she expected, she struck towards goal only to see the effort saved by the goalkeeper.
Wigginton were always a threat themselves, though, and eventually enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure. RI initially defended well but, after several opportunities to clear a loose ball inside the penalty area, Wigginton were eventually able to take advantage and slot home the equaliser.
It was a frustrating goal to concede, but the girls reacted positively and continued to play with the same energy and determination.
RI were certainly trying to attack. On several occasions the girls were caught narrowly offside when attempting to run beyond the Wigginton defence. Although something to work on in terms of timing their runs, it was also a good indication of RI's attacking intent and willingness to play forward.
The teams therefore went into half-time level at 1–1 after a closely fought opening 30 minutes.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams competing well but RI gradually beginning to create the better opportunities.
The ability to rotate players also made a difference. ER came into midfield and contributed well both defensively and going forward, while GW continued to develop in the defensive midfield role she had impressed in during the previous game, breaking up opposition attacks and providing extra protection in front of the defence.
CL also made a really positive contribution in attacking midfield and up front. Her confidence is clearly growing with every game and she increasingly looked comfortable getting involved in RI's attacking play.
New player HB also made an excellent first impression. Playing in midfield and in a more defensive role at different stages, she listened well to instructions, covered plenty of ground and brought lots of energy to the team.
EM also slotted comfortably into the side when re-introduced, producing some strong tackles and supporting the players around her well.
As the second half progressed, RI continued to push for the goal, which their performance deserved.
With around five minutes remaining, they finally got it.
RI won a corner and committed plenty of players forward into the penalty area. BP delivered the ball into a crowded box, where the pressure from the RI players caused problems for the Wigginton defence. The ball eventually broke to EH, who kept her composure and guided it into the goal to put RI 2–1 ahead.
It was a fantastic moment and a deserved reward for the team's second-half pressure.
Rather than simply sitting back afterwards, RI managed the closing stages intelligently. Fresh players were introduced where possible and IA was pushed further forward into an attacking midfield role, where she did an excellent job carrying the ball into the Wigginton half and relieving pressure on the defence.
Wigginton still had one late opportunity, but CA produced an excellent save to her right post to help preserve the lead.
The final whistle confirmed a deserved 2–1 victory and RI's first positive result of the season.
More important than the result itself was the way the girls achieved it. There was energy throughout the team, players worked hard for one another and everyone contributed when called upon. It was a performance full of determination, teamwork and growing confidence.
OS was named Wigginton's Opposition Player of the Match for the second week running after another energetic performance and excellent goal.
The Coaches' Player of the Match went to DF following a superb defensive display in which she barely put a foot wrong, while the Parents' Player of the Match was MT after an excellent performance at the back, numerous important clearances and an unlucky effort at the other end.
A brilliant team performance, a deserved first win of the season — and plenty for the girls to be proud of.
