🌱 OUR FINAL FIBRE CHAT!
Well, we’ve made it to the end of our Fibre Challenge!
And hopefully fibre doesn’t feel quite so mysterious anymore.
When we started, we talked about what fibre actually is and discovered that it’s much more than simply something that “keeps you regular.”
We’ve learned that fibre is important for digestive health and that eating enough is associated with a range of health benefits.
We’ve discovered that fibre comes from plant foods, fruit, vegetables, beans, lentils, wholegrains, nuts and seeds.
We’ve talked about the importance of variety, because different plant foods provide different types of fibre and can support the diversity of our gut bacteria.
We’ve also talked about increasing fibre gradually, particularly if your starting intake was quite low.
And we’ve remembered something really important alongside all that fibre:
Fluids!
And finally, we’ve introduced our 30g target.
Thirty grams a day is the UK recommendation for adults, but remember, it’s a guide, not a competition.
If you’re currently eating 15g, getting to 20g is progress.
If you’re at 20g, getting to 25g is progress.
And if you’re already around 30g, brilliant, keep doing what you’re doing!
The aim is to make fibre-rich foods a normal part of your everyday diet.
You don’t need to count every gram for the rest of your life.
Hopefully, after a month of thinking about fibre, you’ll naturally start looking at your meals differently.
You’ll think:
“Could I add some vegetables?”
“Could I have some fruit?”
“Could I add beans or lentils?”
“Could I choose a wholegrain?”
“Could I add some nuts or seeds?”
And all those little decisions add up.
