The Tudor Challenge - Saturday, 15 August 2026 - it was a hot one!!!

2 YGRC crews headed across the Solent at the weekend to take part in this tough 10-mile challenge, hosted by Tudor Sailing Club, racing round the beautiful waters of Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth (although it was so hot they may have preferred to be in the beautiful waters rather than on them!) 😎😁

It was a great effort and performance from rowers and coxes in Sea Spirit and Spirit, the Club’s Cornish Pilot Gigs, with Sea Spirit completing the course in 1 hour 39 mins, finishing 2nd overall in class by just 1 minute!!

(Not quite) Round Hayling Rowing Race - 28th June 2026

With wind strength above Force 5, event organisers, Coastal Rowing Academy and Langstone Adventure Rowing, implemented an established Plan B. The 13-mile course, circumnavigating Hayling Island itself, was shortened to a 10-mile course through Langstone Harbour, round the “Mulberry Bush” and back again.

The strong south-westerly breeze meant the outward leg was wind against tide - challenging conditions well negotiated by Sea Spirit and crew. The half-way point was marked by rounding the concrete remains of a World War II Mulberry Harbour – hence rowing “round the Mulberry Bush”, returning on a slack tide with a following breeze - surfing all the way home!

Sea Spirit finished in a time of 1 hour 24 minutes, gaining 2nd place in the Cornish Pilot Gig class, and 2nd overall in the “Super Vets”. Entries included St Ayles Skiffs and Bursledon Gigs, Jolly Boats and Thames Waterman Cutters, Solent Galleys and Coastal 4s ...

A fantastic event and a great day out! HUGE thanks to the organisers, marshals, officials and volunteers (and for those wonderful burgers, cakes and tea at the finish!)

An Open Crew from YGRC (comprising 2 women and 4 men - 5 with the Cox), is heading off, on a crack-of-sparrow ferry, to Hayling Island tomorrow (Sun 28th June) to compete in the Round Hayling Rowing Race - a tough 13.5 mile race through Chichester Harbour, the Solent and Langstone Harbours (the wind direction dictating whether boats go round in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction).

The weather has cooled down enough (just in time!) for the race to go ahead and the Club's Cornish Pilot Gig, Sea Spirit, is ready on her trailer, with Cox and Crew looking forward to a great day on the water … Wish us luck!!!😎😎😃
