πŸ§₯ Have you taught your child the backwards coat method?

Place the coat on the floor with the inside facing upwards and the collar nearest your child’s feet.

Then:

1️⃣ Put hands into the sleeves
2️⃣ Lift arms over the head
3️⃣ Flip the coat onto the back

It’s a simple trick, but it can make such a difference when one adult is helping lots of children get ready at the same time!

This week, you could also practise:

πŸ‘• Trying on the full uniform and PE kit
πŸ‘Ÿ Taking off and putting on shoes and socks
🧀 Managing hats and gloves
🏷️ Finding name labels inside clothes and shoes
πŸ₯ͺ Opening lunch and snack containers

We’ve put all our practical starting-school tips into one helpful blog:

Your child doesn’t need to be able to read, write or do everything independently before starting school. πŸ’š

Sometimes, the smallest practical skills make the biggest difference:

✨ Recognising their name on a peg
✨ Knowing where to find the label in their jumper
✨ Opening their water bottle
✨ Putting their shoes back on after PE
✨ Telling an adult when they need the toilet
✨ Asking for help when they feel sad or unwell

In a busy classroom, adults may not immediately notice that a child is fidgeting because they need the toilet or has become quiet because something is wrong.

Practising simple phrases such as β€œPlease can you help me?” can give your child the confidence to communicate what they need.

πŸŽ’ ONE WEEK TO GO! πŸŽ’

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer!

With just one week until many children start or return to school, now is a great time to practise some of the little things that can make their day feel much easier.

Can your child:

πŸ‘Ÿ Put on their shoes and socks?
πŸ§₯ Put on their coat?
🍎 Open their snack pot or lunchbox?
🏷️ Find their name inside their belongings?
πŸ™‹ Ask an adult for help?
πŸ’¬ Say when they feel ill, sad, thirsty or need the toilet?

They don’t need to do everything perfectly. A little relaxed practice can help them feel more confident and independent.

We’ve shared lots more practical tips in our latest blog:

What will you be practising this week?
