The fight was over.

It had been broken up.

Everyone had left the pub.

And if the story had ended there, two men would still be alive.

But it didn’t.

Because sometimes the most important decision in a confrontation isn’t the one you make during it.

It’s the one you make afterwards.

When the immediate danger has passed.

When you have the opportunity to leave.

But the anger hasn’t gone with you.

Ego. Humiliation. Revenge.

They can keep a confrontation alive long after the confrontation itself should have ended.

And that raises a question worth thinking about:

At what point does an argument stop being something that happened to you… and become something you’re choosing to continue?

In this case, that choice eventually left two men dead.

One of them hadn’t even been involved in the original argument.

If someone showed you a police badge, would you believe them?

Carol DaRonch did something sensible.

When a man claiming to be a police officer approached her, she questioned him.

She asked to see identification.

And he showed her a badge.

The problem?

The man proving he was a police officer was the same man claiming to be one.

His name was Ted Bundy.

That’s the distinction I want my own kids to understand:

Proof isn’t the same as independent verification.

Uniforms can be copied.
Badges can be copied.
Confidence can be convincing.

If something doesn’t add up, don’t be embarrassed to check.
