Aikido Memorial Course – In Memory of Shihan Keith Hayward 7th Dan

It is with great respect and affection that we invite all friends, students, and members of the wider Aikido community to join us for a special Memorial Course in honour of Shihan Keith Hayward 7th Dan.

📅 Date: Saturday, 1st August 2026

This course is an opportunity to come together, train in the spirit that Keith embodied throughout his life, and celebrate the incredible legacy he left to so many of us. His dedication, friendship, and passion for Aikido continue to inspire generations of practitioners.

Whether you trained with Keith for many years or met him only briefly, we hope you will join us in remembering a remarkable teacher and person.

Please see the attached poster for full course details, venue information, and registration times.
We sincerely hope as many of you as possible can attend and help us make this a fitting tribute to an exceptional Shihan.

Please feel free to share this post with your clubs and fellow Aikidoka.

Although the sun didn’t shine on us today, we had a nice time at St Peter’s festival (Worcester), just chilling out…enjoying each others company and having a blast doing weapon kata.😆😆😆😆great to see everyone making mistakes (which means your learning!) and doing your best.

Thanks for all your help and support in promoting Zanshin-Kai Aikido

Considering there were a number of different aikido courses this weekend, we had a nice turnout for our second Four Shires course.

Many thanks to the instructors but more importantly to the students who made the day👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

There are times in an instructors “teaching life” when his students may have doubts of their abilities, this is when the instructor has to reassure the student that they are ready and help put the students mind at ease. But as we know….when it comes to gradings a student is only as good as how they perform on the day and (if anyone is like me) we hope that it goes well for them on the day.

I say this because in my time teaching, I have had one student who was going for 1st Kyu, but ended up going it 5 times! Not that this person wasn’t ready….not that this person did something wrong but because for some reason it wasn’t their time. Eventually that person passed and went on to become my first Dan grade student..to which I am very proud of.

Today I had two students who were grading for 1st Kyu. Although I had faith, you can never know how things turn out on the day and I was hoping that the outcome would be a positive one.

We had so many emotions going… nervousness, tears, self doubt…the lot, but in the end….they put all these thoughts behind them and got on with the job. I am so proud of my students, the way they conducted themselves…the way they dealt with their fears and doubts.

Congratulations to the following students:

Lisa Smith: (Zanshin-Kai) promoted to 1st Kyu
Steve Perry: (Zanshin-Kai) promoted to 1st Kyu
Gary Harper (Ren Sei Kan)promoted to 1st Kyu
Gwilym Williams (Ren Sei Kan) promoted to Shodan.

Congratulations to all 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾and thank you to everyone who participated 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾🙇🏾‍♂️🙇🏾‍♂️🙇🏾‍♂️
