If your still thinking about whether to invest in swimming lessons perhaps this data will convince you that swimming should be the number one priority over all other after school activities

ITV subsequently reported 13 open-water fatalities during June as a whole.

July 2026

ITV’s later review gives 27 open-water fatalities in July.

The Guardian reported that by 23 July, there had already been at least 35 drowning deaths since May, including eight in July at that point.

So the July total appears to have accelerated considerably during the latter part of the month.

August 2026

ITV reported 10 open-water fatalities from 1–16 August.

Some individually documented cases include:

* 3 August: a 14-year-old boy drowned in Millwall Outer Dock, London.
* 9 August: an 18-year-old man died after getting into difficulty at Camber Sands, East Sussex.
* 15 August: a 12-year-old boy drowned in the River Lea near Hackney Marshes.
* 18 August: three members of the same family — a man, woman and girl — died after getting into difficulty in the water near Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. Another young daughter survived but was critically ill.

What does that give us?

The strongest numbers available are:

* 19 accidental water-related deaths, 24–31 May
* 13 open-water fatalities during June
* 27 during July
* 10 during 1–16 August
* 3 additional deaths at Shoreham on 18 August

That gives at least 72 deaths from those documented periods alone. And that doesn’t include all of January–April, the first 23 days of May, or deaths after 16 August other than the Shoreham tragedy.
