โWeโve been coming to ATA for just over a year now. My son had already been training for around three months and was really enjoying his classes, so I decided to join through the Fatherโs Day promotion.
Now, we train together as a family. Itโs helped teach him discipline, build his confidence and given us something really positive to enjoy as a group.
Itโs such a great activity to do together as a family!โ
Martial arts isnโt just about learning new skillsโitโs about growing stronger and more confident together. โค๏ธ

The second pillar of conviction is ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญโchoosing the right path, even when itโs hard.
In martial arts, commitment means continuing to train with effort and focus, even when youโre tired. Outside class, it might mean putting your school bag away and completing your homework before playing games or having fun.
Doing the right thing isnโt always the easiest choiceโbut every time we follow through, we strengthen our discipline, character and conviction. ๐ช

One of the key attributes weโre focusing on in training is reaction forceโbased on Newtonโs third law:
โFor every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.โ
We can see this clearly in a basic martial arts punch. As one hand drives forward, the reaction hand pulls back with equal speed and power. These opposing movements help us generate power, control our momentum and maintain balance throughout the technique.
Although we wouldnโt punch this way during sparring or self-defence, practising the basic motion teaches the body how to understand and channel reaction force naturally.
Master the fundamentals, and they become part of every technique you perform. ๐ฅ๐ฅ

In our Leadership Program, our child students are learning how to introduce people to one another confidently and politely.
A great introduction includes:
โญ Saying each personโs nameโจโญ Sharing something positive or interesting about themโจโญ Mentioning something they have in common
For example: โThis is Mr Paulichen. Heโs really good at martial arts, and youโll enjoy being in class with him. This is Gregโheโs a brilliant videographer who creates fantastic social media videos. You both love football too!โ
This simple skill can help a new student or visiting friend feel comfortable, included and part of the group straight away.
Leadership isnโt only about taking chargeโitโs also about helping others feel welcome. ๐ฅ

In our Leadership Program, weโve been exploring empathyโand its first pillar: ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง.
Comprehension means: โI understand your feelings and experiences.โ
To empathise with someoneโespecially someone whose life is very different from our ownโwe need imagination.
Reading fiction is a brilliant way to develop it. Stories allow us to step into another personโs world, see life through their eyes and better understand how they might feel or behave.
By encouraging our students to read novels and explore new stories, weโre not only developing their imaginationโweโre helping them become more thoughtful, understanding and empathetic leaders. ๐
What book has helped you see the world from a different perspective? ๐

In our Legacy programme, weโre currently training with the Combat Bahng Mahng Ee โ and learning how to use distraction to create an opening.
By tapping the floor before attacking, we draw our opponentโs eyes and guard down, leaving the higher target exposed.
Itโs the same principle we use in traditional sparring: the first technique doesnโt always need to score. Sometimes its purpose is to shift the opponentโs focus and create an opportunity for the next attack.
Watch Mr Paulichen demonstrate: tap low, draw the attention down, then attack high! ๐
Good sparring isnโt just about speed and power โ itโs about strategy, timing and controlling your opponentโs focus.

๐ฅ The life skill weโre focusing on right now is ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐งโand its first pillar is courage.

Whether itโs staying focused in class when others are distracted or resisting peer pressure at school, courage means making the right choiceโeven when those around us choose differently.
Through martial arts, our students learn to think for themselves, trust their judgement and have the confidence to stand by their values. ๐ช

When we kick, maintaining good balance allows us to land in the correct position and transition smoothly into our next techniqueโwithout wobbling or being forced to fall forward.
This becomes especially important during sparring or self-defence. When we stay balanced, we remain in control of what happens next. We can choose to step forward, move back, kick again or follow with a hand technique.
Good balance doesnโt just improve the techniqueโit gives us more choices.
