Aspull 5–38 Old Salts

Aspull welcomed touring side Old Salts from Birmingham for another tough pre-season test, with the visitors running out 38–5 winners.

The Emus once again let loose a very young side against a well-drilled and experienced Old Salts outfit who play two divisions above Aspull. With weddings and holidays at the top of the August agenda, much of our more experienced squad were otherwise engaged.

On paper, the scoreline doesn’t make for great reading, but the young fledglings once again impressed. Coming up against a side containing several county-level players provided a fantastic learning curve and exactly the sort of challenge our young players need.

Old Salts’ 9 and 10 gave their team huge width and it took Aspull most of the first half to work out how to counter it. The second half was a much tighter affair, with the Aspull forwards doing a far better job of stopping the surge of a much bigger pack.

Harley Lewis once again stood out defensively, this time producing several important tackles to stop what looked like certain try-scoring opportunities.

Ellis Clarke and Benji Angwaba both made some fantastic breaks and were unlucky to be tackled just short on a number of occasions. Both have pace to burn and footwork to match, making them an exciting pair to keep a very close eye on as the season approaches.

Nick Carter played his heart out all afternoon, while Graham Johnson and Ollie Carter didn’t leave a blade of grass untouched in a tireless performance. Josh Hill carried strongly all day, with young Liam Reeve showing some classy touches throughout.

Joe Robey looked very comfortable in his new position at scrum-half. It’s a great position for Joe β€” mainly because we don’t have to keep telling him to be quiet!

Joint Man of the Match went to young Aaron Briggs and Aquila Coultas. Aaron seems to get better with every game, while Aquila appears to get bigger every week!

It was another big learning curve for the young men of Aspull, with plenty still to work on, but after that display against a much bigger and more experienced side, I have every confidence in this squad going into the new season.

The results will come, but right now it’s about giving these young players the experience, confidence and belief to take the next step.

The future is looking very exciting for the Emus.

We greatly appreciate the backing from Graham Hurst and everyone at GHE.

These will read much better on Facebook if posted individually with the player graphic attached. They are short enough to keep engagement high while still giving each sponsor some recognition.
