Coast life.

I was the last of my dads children. Here he is. Happy days somewhere off the coast of Egypt. He was Greek. WW2 came along he was then promptly taken to work as a stoker in the Royal Navy. He never talked about the war. Much later when I was a small child he would sit with his buddies and chat. I would make them drinks like G and T. I was 8 🙂. That’s fine. One of our neighbours was a spitfire pilot. The other some commodore. The other popped along was an ex prisoner of war he had a nervous tick. Their conversations focused on tomatoes and funny stories never about the horrors. They knew they had endured and their reward was a peaceful life. Not a boring life. Not ‘I want excitement’. I sometimes think we’ve forgotten about peace and contentment as something to hold very closely. All the best folks.

White working-class children 'failed by schools system' 29/06/2026

Yes, sadly, I am going to rant, am I.... maybe, could have said this 20 years ago simply observing outcomes and destinations of learners. The tail has got longer. Measuring the management of schools is fine (oftsed etc) and these measurement of outputs (quality statements) make an assumption the outputs make a difference. They don't in quite a few cases. Clearly. For certain schools, they are islands of rest bite, care and yes, fending of hunger. I could share some desperate stories of children arriving to school needing to be fed, clothed and protected even before they try and get grade 4 in Maths. Honestly the reality is finally biting but that is because, unlike certain societal roles the failings of educational policy and Government economic policy do not manifest themselves until years down the line. Unlike hospitals or financial institutions where you make a mistake and someone dies or millions/billions lost the stakes seem higher but they are not. So it is NOT the school system, not the hard working staff trying to offer hope, these children can see there is no hope they are surrounded by it. Therefore role models are so important, young folks need to see their peers doing well and sharing their stories that gives hope. Destinations, hope, career paths, I could go on. but I have ranted, apologies:) I am sure there are other points of views. Time to blow up the model:)

White working-class children 'failed by schools system' The inquiry spoke to thousands of young people and their parents, as well as hundreds of teachers.
