Sorry about the silence re next Sat. We were offered the opportunity by Bothams Prestige Sports Turf Contractors to get the square fully rennovated this week - which was completed today - so the ground is officially closed down for the winter. So no end of season bash. The nets will close at the end of this month.

🏏 31 SEASONS. 9 YEARS AS CAPTAIN. ONE PARISH LEGEND.

Some careers finish with a guard of honour, a match-winning fifty and a fairy-tale ending, Peter Maw finished his by missing a straight one.

Yesterday marked the end of Peter’s time as captain of our Sunday Development XI after around nine seasons at the helm, and the end of an incredible 31 seasons of regular cricket for Whiston Parish Church CC.

Peter first played for the Parish in 1996, meaning his career actually predates our modern statistics. Back then, scorebooks were made of paper, Play-Cricket was a distant nightmare and, presumably, Peter was already refusing to hit the ball in the air. Our records from 2001–2026 show:

🏏 306 games
🏏 2,646 runs
🏏 6 fifties – HS 67
🏏 161 fours
🏏 3 sixes – roughly one every 102 games
🏏 66 catches & 2 run-outs
🏏 One solitary over in 2015… which went for 9. His bowling career was sensibly retired immediately.

But the numbers tell only a fraction of the story. For the best part of a decade, Peter has led the Sunday Development XI and helped make it exactly what it should be, a place for juniors to take their first steps into senior cricket, develop their game and enjoy being part of the club.

As Peter said himself, the side is in a much better place than when he took it on, with some genuinely exciting talent now emerging from our junior ranks. That doesn’t happen by accident.

Across three decades he has played his own part in helping the Parish become the club it is today, as a player, captain, volunteer and, of course, our Honorary Secretary.

But after 31 seasons and around nine years leading our Sunday Dev XI, a huge thank you is very much deserved.

Thank you, Peter, for the cricket, the captaincy, the encouragement given to generations of players and everything you continue to do for the Parish.

A proper club man. ❤️🏏

The Sunday Dev XI team rounded off the season in style with a convincing win against Brookhouse.

We welcomed Brady & Tyler Saunders into the team. The visitors elected to bat and the Whiston attack set about them with gusto. Mayra led the attack with an impressive 4 for 3 and Nathan had a very tidy 1 for 7. At one-point Brookhouse were 6 for 5. Harry T (the mullet) cashed in with 3 for 23 and Tyler had a nice 4 over session. Zaheer rounded things off with 2 for 22 as we hustled them out for 58.

In reply, Jacob T with an unbeaten 31 and Braiden S 14* saw us over the line to record an 8 wicket win in 11 overs. We have finished next to bottom with 3 wins, but I have seen real development from a number of junior players and an introduction to senior cricket for others. Thank you to those senior players who have helped out during the campaign.

The match marked the formal end of Peter Maw’s captaincy of the Sun Dev XI – which he has done for around 9 seasons. It was unfortunately an ignominious end missing a straight one!!! A big thank you to the barmy army on the decking and Ailie Walton for scoring.

We are in a much better place than when I took the job on with some real talent now emerging from the junior ranks. Thank you to all the parents and club members who have given fantastic support over the last few years. It has been a real pleasure to be part of cricket at the Parish as a player marking the end of 31 seasons playing regularly for the club. Along the way I have played with some great people and the club is unrecognisable now from what it was when I joined in 1996. We should be very proud of what we are as a club and the progress that we continue to plan into the future. As always thank you to so many people for their support – it has been a tough summer from a personal and family point of view. Cricket is about a club and the people in it, and I love being part of that!!

Onwards and upwards and UP THE PARISH!

Defeat on the day, but job done for the Parish 2nds as six valuable points secured our place in Division Six for next season. 🏏👏

After Whitley Hall won the toss and elected to bat, Parish used plenty of options with the ball to keep working for breakthroughs as the visitors posted 203-6 from their 40 overs.

Shadab Ahmed picked up another two wickets to add to his excellent season tally, while Jack Croker, Cameron Walton, Amir Araf and Basharat Ali all claimed one apiece. There were some particularly economical spells too, with Amir returning 1-7 from three overs, Bash 1-11 from four and Braiden Stokes conceding just 13 from his four. 👏

The Parish reply started at a blistering pace thanks to Danny Morton, who smashed nine boundaries in a rapid 39 from just 21 deliveries, helping take the score to 45 before the first wicket fell.

A difficult spell then saw Parish slip from 45-0 to 78-5, leaving plenty of work to do. Safyan Arshad and Basharat Ali responded with an important 60-run partnership for the sixth wicket, Safyan contributing a valuable 26 while Bash settled in and began to take control of the chase.

Even as wickets continued to fall around him, Bash kept Parish in the contest. His excellent unbeaten 67 from 70 deliveries took the game deep into the final overs, with Amir Araf joining him at the end as the 2nds continued to push for victory.

Ultimately, Parish reached 195-8 from their 40 overs, finishing just eight runs short. But those 195 runs also secured six valuable league points, enough to guarantee the 2nds their place in Division Six next season. ✅

So, not quite the victory we wanted, but mission accomplished. After a season of some excellent wins, close finishes and plenty of fight, Division Six cricket at Church Fields is secured for 2027. ❤️🏏

A battling performance from the Parish 1st XI on the road at Cleethorpes, with the lads making the hosts work hard for the victory despite having a modest total to defend.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Parish found themselves in difficulty at 54-5. Skipper Danny Kemp responded positively with 29 from just 24 balls, before Brady Saunders provided some much-needed stability through the second half of the innings.

Brady battled through to finish 28 not out from 72 balls, while Yahya Ahmad added 17 and Tom Bolland contributed a useful 23 as Parish recovered to 156 all out.

With a relatively small total to defend, Parish certainly didn’t make life easy for the hosts. Joe Norbury and Tom Bolland struck early to reduce Cleethorpes to 16-2, before James Sturman marked his 1st XI appearance with an excellent spell of 2-22 from 7.3 overs. Yahya Ahmad also picked up a wicket, while Harry Paver conceded just eight runs from his three overs as Parish kept working for a way back into the contest.

Cleethorpes eventually reached the target five wickets down, but Parish made them work for it and showed plenty of determination in defending a difficult total.
