Hi I’m Jenna and I’m the owner/founder of Joy Yoga. I’ve introduced the rest of my incredible teaching team at Joy so I thought I’d now pop a post up about me & my teaching.
I started practising yoga in 2014 after a pretty crappy time that included a horrendous separation and having cancer. Yoga became my anchor. The thing that brought me back to me. The thing that taught me who I was again once all the crazy had calmed. I began teaching nearly 10 years ago with the aim of introducing yoga to people who needed it. My thought was that if my yoga could help just one person in the way it helped me that my job was done. The way that I teach has evolved so much over the years. When I started teaching my classes were pure flow- switch your brain off yoga (as this was what my mind needed at the time!). It was wonderful but I must say my classes now are more purposeful. I like to make my classes accessible for all- I now teach a whole range of classes from fiery flows to super gentle restorative yoga. Flow will always have my heart.
One of my favourite parts of the business are my retreats. There is something special about giving people the chance to retreat from the world and concentrate on them, whether it’s for a day, weekend or week I feel so grateful to be able to facilitate these incredible events. When I think about retreats a big word that comes to me is home. I like to bring people home to themselves. Home is important in my venues too! The Hacienda in Spain is where I spent a transformational week during my yoga teacher training- every time I return I feel like I return home to me. My Thurlestone retreat is literally home! It’s 10 minutes away from the town I grew up in and I love to be able to share that special place with so many people. Cabilla Cornwall is in Bodmin where I spent many a weekend in my childhood due to family living there. It all feels like I’m taking people home!
I read something last week that said “don’t create a class create a community” and that is what I’m most proud of at Joy. The incredible community that attend classes and the wonderful teachers that teach there. It’s the most wonderful space with the most welcoming of people
Outside of yoga I’m mum to two incredible boys who make me proud and drive me slightly crazy every single day. Everything I do I do for them. I’m somewhat addicted to being outside - especially by water. If in doubt my husband knows to chuck me by the sea. Over the last few years I’ve become very aware of how important it is to spend time in nature. It’s not something that’s separate from us it’s a part of who we are. We need to be in nature to be well- in every sense. My time spent at Cabilla Cornwall has made me slightly obsessed with how the trees impact us. Both scientifically and emotively. So much so that I’m about to start a Forest Bathing course. I also love the gym. I’ve trained since I was 18 years old and now heading full steam into perimenopause I realise how important it is for longevity and my mental health.
So that’s a little bit about me! Hopefully catch you at Joy soon!
