Ray Knight highlights the history of the NRCC Lerwick race. It is hard to believe that the first race from Lerwick took place 125 years ago. In those days, Lerwick was a rapidly expanding and bustling fishing port. Today, Shetland has a population of just 23,000, yet the islands land more fish than England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. Of course, the reason the North Road Championship Club was in Lerwick wasn’t for its fish, but its Blue Riband event, the King George V Cup race.
