OFL Week 2
15th April 2023

The OG’s would head into Week 2 at top of the Exile Flag Conference debuting our new away kit, and damn those Yellows were looking 🔥😍.

Game 1 vs Wight Hell Hounds

The game would start off slow for the OG’s who would gain great field position from the throw off from Tommy Burwood but would stall following some great defensive tackling from the Hounds before the Hell Hounds would snag an INT in the Endzone to start their first drive of the game. 3 plays from the Hell Hounds would find them taking the lead against the reigning champions with a TD but a failed XP would leave the OG’s in a 6-0 deficit.

The second drive would start very much like the first with a sack on first down, a short completion, a drop on 3rd down before a dual QB completion to Calado would leave the OG’s just short on their drive and give the Hell Hounds the ball back to try and extend their lead. Hell Hounds would start their drive with a botched snap, followed up by a long completion to just before the half before Jordan Melay would pop up with a pass defence on 3rd down before the Hell Hounds would fail on their drive with another botched snap to give the OG’s the ball back to try and tie up the game.

Buckman would start the drive off well making the Hell Hounds miss their first tackle before Coles would hit Big Jay Alexander for a deep shot to put the OG’s within 10 yards of the Endzone before Coles would once again put the ball on a dime to Big Jay in the back corner with some delicious footwork from the big man to tie the game up at 6-6. The XP would be broken up to leave the game tied.

A couple of penalties from the Hell Hounds would stall their drive and the OG’s defence would be let off as their managed to get the ball back to the offence before the half to try and take the lead. The OG’s would get a big chunk of yardage as the Anti-Shakira would snake his way close to the half way line before Buckman would take us to 4th and 1 at the half before a bit of hot potato would see Coles hit Buckman for a 1st down. The very next play, Coles would hit Tommy Touchdown for the go-ahead score, 12-6.

A let off as a penalty was called for impeding the Blitzer while the Hell Hounds made a large completion but they would struggle to make plays count as their remaining plays would fall incomplete to see out the half with the OG’s leading 12-6.

The Hell Hounds would start the second half receiving the football, a good return would give the Hounds good field position before a tough call from the refs as a big catch down the field would get overturned as incomplete even though it appeared that the grab had been made and a football move made, the Hell Hounds would make up for it on the very next play with a huge completion before Burwood would make the TD saving tackle, a delay of game would follow and a Montanarini sack was not given but the TD was called out of bounds to give the Hell Hounds 3rd and Goal before a dead snap would bring them up to 4th and Goal which ended in another dead snap to kill the Hell Hounds drive. The OG’s would capitalise on this with a huge Coles run to set up a 2nd and short to the half way, a few incompletions would follow before Coles would shake his way to a 1st and Goal situation as the HH were using their Bullet Blitz, he would follow this up with another absolute pin point raindrop to Alexander in double coverage to extend the lead before a Melay catch would be ruled out of bounds on the XP. 18-6.

The HH would start driving but the OG’s defence wouldn’t make it easy for them with some excellent tackling from Dorman, Sterry and Orton before Sterry would almost snag the ball with a diving pass break up, unfortunately a missed tackle would see the Hounds make the Endzone on 4th down to get themselves back in the game but a drop on the XP would leave it 18-12 to the OG’s.

Coles to Burwood would start the next drive off with a beautiful slant in the conditions before Melay would take the short slant over the 1st down marker, Alexander would pick up another big chunk with a slant over the middle as the OG’s would finally get into a rhythm moving the ball, Melay would get the next completion from Coles as he sets them in a 3rd and goal before Buckman would take a short route with a reach to the Endzone but it was called a yard short to set up a 4th and goal from the 1. A Coles to Alexander mossing was denied by a delay of game but on the replayed down Burwood would show off that expert route running as he hit the filthy double move to find himself wide open in the back corner of the Endzone to give the OG’s a 24-12 lead as Alexander would fall short on the XP2 rush.

The HH would march down the field with minimal time remaining with a 3 play drive to grab a final score and XP to finish the game 24-19 to the OG’s.

Game 2 - Vs Ware Wolves

We would finish our day facing off against the Ware Wolves.

The first half would a sloppy but decent back and forth but Burwood would start things off picking up two big yardage plays before Buckman would advance the ball within 10 yards but the OG’s offence would stall in the redzone to give the Wolves possession, however, the INT Queen Dorman would pop with great coverage after fantastic blitz pressure from Monti to give the OG’s great field position. Coles would hit Alexander after some option handoffs with Buckman to bring up 2nd & Goal, where Harrison Buckman would open up his account for the season as he would sit in the two zones to snag a TD and he would follow up on the XP with 1-2 punch to give us the 7-0 lead.

The Wolves would bounce back with a great drive as they marched down the field with 2 great plays before Burwood would come in with a great PBU to bring the Wolves to 4th and Half, the blitz pressure from Monti would see an incomplete pass but a contact penalty was called to give the Wolves an automatic first down which they would convert 3 plays later and then convert the XP to tie things up.

Burwood would snag 15 yards on the first play of the drive as he glided down the field making 3 players miss before heading out of bounds, Wolves would generate a PBU on the next play from the Blitzer before Coles would jink his way for a 1st down with his legs, and would follow up with another deep touchdown to Alexander with a nice catch and tightrope down the sideline to take the lead, the XP would be picked off to leave things 13-7. The Wolves would not be denied and they would match the OG’s output as they would head down the field in 6 plays to tie things up and then take the lead with the XP, 14-13.

With minimal time remaining, the OG’s would look to the Coles to Melay connection as Melay would take a short slant and hit the spin move past 2 would-be tacklers and pick up a comfortable 15 yards before another 15 yards following a low catch in coverage before picking up YAC to put the OG’s just outside the redzone, a PBU was required by Big Jay to stop an INT on 1st & Goal before a nice chunk from Buckman would put the OG’s in the RZ, a beautiful wheel would see Coles hit Melay for his 1st TD of the day with time expiring in the first half, Melay would get a toe tap in the back corner to convert the XP and give us the lead 20-14.

The 2nd Half, the defensive side of the ball really stepped up stopping the Wolves on their first drive of the half with Ben Sterry coming up clutch as a high snap threw the Wolves QB off his rhythm and Sterry would grab an INT but the sloppy ground wouldn’t let him advance the ball. The offence kicked into high gear then with Alexander taking a high point catch before Coles couldn’t get his legs going in the mud before a Wolves sack would leave them at 3rd and Half, Calado would snag his first catch of the game to pick up the first down, 2 plays later, Burwood would skate past another 2 defenders to pick up big yardage to set us up in the RZ, Buckman / Coles would hit the hot potato to avoid the BB before Coles would drop it in the bucket for Tommy Burwood to snag the TD in tight coverage and toe tapping beauty to extend the lead before converting the XP with some dual QB trickery and the Burwood Griddy to give us a 28-14 lead.

D stepping up again with some great tackling from Orton on the first play of the drive before Melay would use his retired ball hawking ability to grab the INT to set up the O once again, the Offence would convert the opportunity as Coles would hit Calado on the catch for the TD but no converted XP. 34-14. With the defence back on the field, Sterry & Melay with great tackling would restrict the Wolves on their drive before the former would step up again with his 2nd INT of the game but this time would make good yards and would end up giving the O the ball back. Coles looking relaxed would hit Alexander, Burwood (who hit a filthy spin move on his defender to pick up good yardage), and finally Big Jay on the toe tap back corner catch for another score to his collection before Calado would convert the XP, 41-14.

Defence once again would make the Wolves life hell, once again with Dorman getting a PBU, very almost another pick, before a big completion to the Wolves WR would set them up in the RZ for the first time since the 1st half. Great coverage from D would end Ware’s drive with 4 incompletions to give the OG’s one more shot on O, a big INT from Ware would give them another shot but PBU’s from Orton and Melay would stop the Wolves leaving the game 41-14.

OFL Week 1
18th March 2023

The OG’s would look to bounce back from their OFL Cup outing with 3 games in Week 1 of the OFL Regular Season against our division rivals (Cowens Cougars, Earls Barton Saxons & Kings Lynn Mariners).

Game 1 - Vs Cowens Cougars

We would start off the title defence campaign with a match up against the Cowens Cougars. The Cowens would start with a quick 3 play drive to score a TD to take the lead 6-0, on the ensuing drive, the OG’s would start with two quick completions to Harling and Buckman before two incompletions would see the OG’s first drive fall flat. The defence would adjust and great coverage and tackling would put Cowens Cougars in a 4th and half situation before Chris Montanarini would grab his first sack of the day to turnover on downs to give the offence the ball back. Unfortunately, the drive would end with a turnover after the Cowens would snag the INT to end the first quarter and they would start the 2nd Quarter by capatilising on the Turnover to grab another TD and converted the XP to take a 13-0 lead.

The OG’s offence would need to grab a score to keep themselves in the game and Nathan Coles would start the drive with.a rush before hitting Tom Harling and Harrison Buckman to set up 4th and half before hitting Tommy Burwood for the OG’s opening score of the season and Big Jay Alexander would snag the XP to get us back in the game, 13-7. The Cowens would get one last drive before the half, and marched over the half and on 2nd and Goal, Steve Orton would step up in a big spot to end the half with his first INT of the season. 13-7 HT.

The OG’s would be feeling themselves after their final drive of the first half and Coles would hit Harling, Burwood and Alexander for the first down before hitting Tommy Burwood for the score to tie the game in the third quarter. 13-13.

The Cowens would bounce back, and another 3 play drive would see them back in the Endzone to take the lead quickly but a failed XP would leave the game at 19-13 to Cowens. Things started heating up as the OG’s would march down the field themselves and Coles would hit Burwood again to complete his hat-trick to tie the game, 19-19.

The next drive for both teams would stall and heading deep into the 4th quarter the Cowens would start driving and completing passes to set up a 1st and goal situation in favourable position to win the game with the clock running down before Chris Montanarini would grab his 2nd and 3rd sacks of the game on 3rd and 4th down to give the OG’s a shot at winning the game with 1.00 remaining on the clock. Coles would start the drive with 2 big completions to Buckman and Burwood before a penalty on the bullet blitz would give them a closer shot from 3rd and half before Coles would evade the bullet blitz and throw to the Endzone where Jay Alexander would box out the defender and bring a big grab and get both toes down to score with time expiring on the clock to send the OG’s to victory with a walk off 25-19 victory to start the season off.

Game 2 - Vs Earls Barton Saxons

Our second game of the season would follow straight after as we would face of against the Rookie Team from Earls Barton. This game would see the offence take their momentum from the last result and explode as they would score on the opening throw off with Tommy Burwood scoring his first throw off of the season in emphatic fashion and this would be followed up by a XP2 connection between Coles and Jorge Calado to give us an 8-0 lead, the defence would get the turnover on downs with some great tackling to give the offence the ball back with Coles hitting Jorge Calado again but this time for the touchdown and Jay Alexander would hit Nathan Coles for the XP2 to go up 16-0.

The defence would keep pressure up with Chris Monti picking up his 4th sack of the day before a Steve Orton turnover would give the offence back the ball in great field position and that man again Coles would find Jay Alexander for the score, no XP to follow but we would enjoy a 22-0 lead. Another drive for the Saxons and Monti would grab his 5th sack of the day with his first game day at Blitzer and the defence would stand strong to turn the ball over again. The Coles to Alexander connection would shine through again as a big completion for first down before Alexander would haul in the score to take us up 28-0.

The Saxons would get things moving on their next drive and move into good field position moving the ball well before an interception by Connor Melay on 4th and Goal would end the Saxons drive. The next Offensive drive would see a great mazy run from Coles at QB before that #10 to #11 connection as Alexander would complete his hat-trick and Burwood would grab the XP2 and the OG’s would be 36-0 at the half time buzzer.

The Saxons would start off with a great throwoff return to give them 1st and goal but great coverage from the OG’s would see Connor Melay snag his 2nd INT of the game to end the Saxons hopes of breaking the deadlock. The OG’s would drive successfully again with Coles hitting Jordan Melay for his first catches of the season after return from injury before Tommy Burwood would snag the TD and Melay would follow up with an XP2 catch, 44-0.

The Saxons would drive again before stalling out on 4th and goal to give OG’s another shot as Coles would hit Harling for numerous catches on the ensuing drive before hitting Burwood for another TD but the XP would fall short as we would bring up our 50 burger. Defence would stand strong again with Helen Dorman and Ben Sterry sureing up the front zones with great tackling and give the Offence another shot before Coles would hit Burwood for his second hat-trick in two games.

Connor Melay would grab a hat-trick of INT’s with a turnover in the 4th Quarter to give the offence one more shot at the Endzone to finish the game off in style as Jay Alexander would grab his 4th TD of the game to seal the game, 62-0.

Outstanding performance by both sides of the ball to take us to 2-0 on the day.

Game 3 - Vs Kings Lynn Mariners

Our third game of the day would follow straight off after the Saxons result, the game would start off well with the defence standing strong to the turn the ball over on downs again, the defence playing out of their minds. The offence would come in and would carry on their success from the last game and march down the field where Coles would take off running and pick up the rushing TD and on the ensuing XP2, Melay would throw a dart to Burwood for the 8-0 lead. Mariners would stall on their next drive with some pass defence and near INT’s from Ben Sterry and Steve Orton and then the Gunslingers would set off on their offensive drive but they would fail for the first time in 11 drives as the Mariners would grab the INT on 4th and Goal.

The defence would hold firm with great tackling again to stall the Mariners inside their own half before the offence would set off again and a big play down the sideline from Coles to Alexander would give the OG’s another score with 10 / 11 picking up the XP to make it 15-0.

A quick turnaround as Ben Sterry would grab a INT on Mariners 1st down to set us up with 1st and Goal before Tom Harling would grab a big boy catch with a defender draped over him to pick up the score. XP failed but we would take a 21-0 lead.

Another turnover on downs from our staunch defence before Harrison Buckman would take over and set up a 1st and goal with two catch and runs before a 1st and goal rush from Buckman would set the OG’s in good field position before Coles would hit Melay for the touchdown to close off the half at 27-0.

A big return from Burwood at the start of the 3rd quarter would set the OG’s up 1st and Goal and on the first play from Scrimmage, Coles would hit Melay on a wheel route for the score, Melay would complete the XP2 after Coles hit him to extend the lead, 35-0.

Steve Orton would get a crucial block on the next Mariners drive to stop them from advance again and OG’s would score on their next 3 drives to finish the game with Melay grabbing his hat trick and Burwood would snag 2 more to take his total to 8 on the day. Steve Orton & Ben Sterry would snag further INT’s and Helen Dorman would make 2 superb pass break ups to secure our second shut out of the day. Final Result, 53-0.

A fantastic performance from everyone to complete a 3-0 game day. We get back to work next Sunday as we look forward to our next match ups on 15th April against Wight Hell Hounds and Ware Wolves.

This past Saturday, the OG’s competed in the OFL Cup for the second time in as many years.

The day would not start well for the Gunslingers as we would fall to 0-2-1 in the group stage to find ourselves placed in last place and entering the Plate Playoffs, a forfeit win would send us through to the semi-final where we would pick up our first official victory of the day against the Nottingham Bears before falling in a close final to the overall plate winning Keynsham Kings!

Back to the drawing board for the OG’s who start their title defence in 4 weeks against Cowens Cougars, Earls Barton Saxons & Kings Lynn Mariners.

Training starts again this Sunday at Abington Park, Northampton (9.30-11.39).
