swim start for .explores

What a day! With a lot of early morning fog, the race start was delayed, but the organisers handled it brilliantly! Incredible atmosphere! Sounds like the swim was a bit hectic but everyone swam really well.

“Only” a 5k sunset run, but IM Tallinn did an amazing job of making it epic! And the friends and family group is getting bigger every day as more people arrive. So great to see family members getting to experience crossing the finish line, and some of the IM athletes stretching the legs out and enjoying the vibes!

Today was the swim practice this morning for some of the athletes. Special mention for in his emergency-purchase pineapple swim shorts. All Ironman athletes should own a pair! Then lunch and a bit of sightseeing in Tallinn followed by a trip to the hotel spa. Loving my job right now! 🙊

I’m in Tallinn with an amazing group of athletes for the Tallinn Ironman. It’s an absolute honour to be here to support them (even though absolutely screwed us all over by leaving ALL of our luggage in Luton 🤬).

As my athletes know, it’s been a rough 12 months for me personally with some family bereavements and serious illnesses, but also full of amazing opportunities in my work life that have been time consuming but impossible to say no to so I’ve been struggling with time, overwhelm and my mental health. Managing to fit my study around all of this, and producing work that was ok, but didn’t feel like my *best* work… as well as being sick while writing my final end of year project… well… if I’m honest, I expected to scrape a pass so to get 73% on my final assessment and 72% for the year… I’m thrilled!

There have been times this year when I’ve questioned why I’m studying a degree, but I firmly believe that a growth mindset is fundamental for a good coach, and challenging myself is a good thing. Even when I’ve been chugging coffee and questioning my life choices. 🙊

Study for Applying sport and exercise sciences to coaching starts in sept! Hopefully this year will be a little smoother…

It was a busy race weekend for Smarter Tri athletes! And despite the heat, everyone raced really well, whether they were chasing PBs, coming back from injuries or surgery, or overcoming some demons. I’m so proud of them all.

When you’re new to triathlon, it’s easy to think you have to start hard on the swim, and when you’re surrounded by people and the nerves are jangling, it’s easy to start too fast. Instead, aim to start slow and build your pace - think of the swim as a warm up for your bike and run! Keep it chill and try to swim the first 100m or so as sllooooowwly as you can! It’ll make everything else so much easier and far more enjoyable!
