When you’ve spent enough years inside dance studios, you realise something funny about the dancers who stay with you.

They aren’t always the ones you expected.

Of course I remember the big moments. The incredible performances. The dancers who could walk onto a stage and immediately command it. The kids who picked things up ridiculously quickly.

But some of the dancers I remember most clearly weren’t necessarily those dancers.

They were the ones who made the class laugh.

The dancer who took a little longer to learn something, and the look on their face when they finally got it.

The kid who started painfully shy and somehow became the person welcoming the nervous new student into class.

The ones who were never going to win everything, but turned up every single week.

The dancers who simply became part of the fabric of the studio.

Dance naturally creates moments where certain people are watched.

Someone gets the lead. Someone wins. Someone stands in the centre. Someone gets the solo.

None of that is inherently bad.

But the longer I teach, the less convinced I am that the dancers receiving the most attention are necessarily the dancers having the biggest impact on the room.

Sometimes it’s the kid standing three people back.

Sometimes it’s the dancer who notices when someone is alone.

Sometimes it’s the one who quietly works for years without ever being the obvious standout.

There are so many ways to be important in a dance studio.

Being the one everyone is watching is only one of them.

I hope we remember to tell our dancers that.

And, maybe more importantly, I hope we remember to show them. 🤍
