9.45kg down, but that’s only part of Callum’s progress.

When Callum started working with me in April, he knew something needed to change but he wasn’t quite sure how to do it.

He wanted to lose body fat and change his physique, but there was more going on than simply wanting the scales to come down.

He lacked confidence training independently, regularly skipped breakfast, relied on convenience food around work, struggled with consistency and was constantly comparing himself to others.

5 months later, Callum has gone from 79kg to 69.55kg.

But, some of my favourite changes aren’t shown by that number.

He’s more confident and independent in the gym, he’s built more structure around his meals. His sleep and daily routine have changed and he has more energy to actually enjoy his time outside of work.

One thing he said in his feedback really summed up what I want people to get from coaching:

“You’ve given me the knowledge and confidence I’ve needed to be independent in the gym.”

Because the goal isn’t for you to need a coach forever.

It’s to help you build the knowledge, habits and confidence to eventually know what to do without me.

Callum’s goals do not end here, but he’s a very different person to the one who started 5 months ago.

If you’re reading this thinking “I know something needs to change, I just don’t know where to start.”

I currently have 2 spaces available for nutrition coaching.

DM me “coaching” and we’ll chat about how I can help.

Your programmed session is usually an hour, but something came up today and now you only have half of that.

Would you still go?

I asked a similar question a while ago on my stories. Not a single person chose 30 minutes. I feel it says a lot about how we view exercise.

If we’re used to sessions being 60-90 minutes, then 30-minutes can feel worthless. So instead of doing what we can on the time we have, we do nothing.

One busy day becomes a missed session. Then it happens again. And suddenly we’re waiting for life to stop being so busy before getting back to it.

If a client told me they only had 30 minutes, I wouldn’t tell them to skip the session.

I’d discuss what would be realistic for them to achieve in the given timeframe.

We could set priorities for exercises, maybe reduce some sets, maybe move something to another day.

It may not be the session that was originally planned but it also doesn’t need to be.

Sometimes adapting a plan is more useful than trying to execute it perfectly.

Your routine needs to work in all parts of your life not just when it all goes perfectly.

Because if your only options are committing fully to something or doing nothing at all, then you’re going to have a hard time being consistent.

So, you’ve got 30 minutes. Will you train?

This is something I have conversations with clients about a lot.

What’s the best exercise for X?

What’s the best number of days to train?

What’s the best way to lose weight?

What’s the best rep range?

I get it. You want results quickly but the frustrating answer is…it depends.

There are so many variables to consider when I create programmes for clients: the amount of time they have, how frequently they can train, their experience in the gym, confidence performing exercises, confidence working at different intensities, what they enjoy, their goals and so many more.

But I work in fitness because I genuinely love it. Not everyone does and they shouldn’t have to.

Someone could want to get stronger but not spend 5 days a week in the gym.

Someone may want to lose/gain weight without their whole life revolving around food.

Someone may prefer an exercise that is slightly less “optimal” for their goal but they feel confident and actually enjoy doing it.

It doesn’t make the approach wrong.

Part of being a good coach is understanding the person in front of you, rather than trying to force them into what looks good on paper or what you as a coach, want for them.

I’ve learned that a programme that is slightly less optimal but gets a client moving their body more often and benefits their overall wellbeing is a lot better than the most optimal programme that is carried out once or twice over a few weeks.

The best programme isn’t the one that is most optimal on paper.

It’s the one that’s most appropriate for the person doing it.

So what’s the best way to achieve your goal?

The way that’s most appropriate for you.

Some weeks, getting two sessions done is consistency.

This week I’ve had conversations with clients about getting back to regular meals, trying to improve sleep, walking more, managing stressful periods and getting to the gym when motivation has disappeared.

None of that sounds particularly impressive.

There aren’t any dramatic transformations or perfect weeks to post about.

But this is what coaching actually looks like a lot of the time.

Sometimes a plan can go brilliantly.

Other times life gets busy, sleep isn’t great, stress is high or motivation disappears. But, we work with it!

My job as a coach isn’t to make someone feel guilty about what they didn’t manage to do.

It is to look at the week they had and ask:

What feels realistic that we can do next?

• maybe that’s getting back to 3 gym sessions
• maybe it’s prioritising protein at meals
• maybe it’s going to bed at your normal time
• maybe it’s simply getting outside for a walk

Those things may not make for the most impressive instagram post.

But learning to keep moving forward when life isn’t perfectly setup for you?

That’s where the real progress happens

Celebrate 5 years of Empower Fitness with a 5K!

This year marks 5 years since I started Empower Fitness and I wanted to do include something I love to celebrate.

Running has been such a big part of my life, especially over the 5 years of running (excuse the pun) this business.

So, on Saturday 29th August I’m bringing the two together for an organised 5k around Warminster.

This will be a one off opportunity to get people together, go for a run and grab a coffee and cake at Cafe Anouk.

🏃‍♂️ 5k social run

📍 Meet outside Snap Fitness Warminster at 08:30
☕️ First coffee on me for anyone running
🎟️ Completely free - but, limited to 10 spaces!

You don’t need to be a client or member of Snap Fitness to join. If you fancy a Saturday morning run (sorry Parkrun!) and a coffee with some new people, you’re more than welcome.

I bought a running vest I really liked

When I tried it on, my first thought was:

“My back isn’t lean enough or built enough for something this open.”

It’s interesting because nothing had changed.

I liked the vest before I put it on,
It fit,
It was comfortable.

The thing that did change was the way I started judging my body when I saw myself wearing it.

But I wore it anyway.

I don’t feel that body confidence is looking in the mirror and loving everything you see.

Sometimes the thoughts still appear.

I can feel self conscious and still wear the vest

And I can want to improve my physique without believing I need to hide in the meantime.

Those two things can coexist.

On Friday, I asked:

“How many gym sessions a week do you feel you need to make progress?”

Nobody chose 2 sessions,
38% said 3,
50% said 4,
12% said 5.

I found that quite interesting.

Because I think there can be a big difference between the amount of training we feel we need to do and the amount we actually need to make progress.

If someone feels they need to train 4-5 times per week, but realistically only has time for 2…

2 can start to feel pointless.

“What’s the point if I can’t do it properly?”

So they do nothing.

But two well planned sessions every week can absolutely be productive.

And depending on your goals, experience and circumstances, it might be exactly where I’d start.

More isn’t automatically better.

And doing less doesn’t mean you’re not taking your goals seriously.

Sometimes the most effective plan isn’t the one that asks the most from you.

It’s the one you can actually keep doing.
