Friday’s match between a Waringstown XI and an NCU Presidents XI was never about the result, it was about marking the 175th anniversary of the club in a fitting manner.

The occasion certainly delivered, with a healthy crowd at The Lawn lapping up an entertaining game which featured many of the stars of the club over the last 25 years.

This period has been among the most successful in the club’s history, particularly starting from 2011 onwards when Waringstown began to end North Down’s long domination of NCU silverware.

Since 2011 onwards, we have won four Irish cups, appearing in five consecutive finals, six Premier League titles, five NCU Challenge cups and five Lagan Valley T20 cups.

All of those who started in the Waringstown XI on Friday played significant roles on the field during the last quarter of a century.

Batting first, the Waringstown XI, up against opponents who are still playing cricket at a senior level, posted 126 for five in their 20 overs. The club’s all-time leading run-scorer, James Hall, contributed 24, Andrew Cousins 29 at exactly a run-a-ball and then Simon Harrison struck an unbeaten 21 from just 11 balls to give the innings a late flourish.

Our former player Aaron Kennedy, now of Donacloney Mill, claimed 2–15 while Stephen Johnston of Lurgan took 2-22.

In reply Sam Wilson now of Armagh, top scored for the Presidents XI with 38 retired from just 27 balls and Johnston saw the visitors’ home with nine balls to spare with an unbeaten 23.

Kyle McCallan, Gary Kidd and James Hall all took a wicket apiece.

The Waringstown players all really enjoyed the occasion, even if there were some sore limbs the following day!
