Siu Nim Tao

Commonly translated as the Way of the Little Idea. What does that really mean though?

Siu = Small.

Perhaps it's small in a way that is simple or even single, meaning one, not many.

Nim = Idea.

What is an idea? It's just a thought. Whether its a concept or philosophy, it's still simply a thought generated by the mind.

Tao = Way.

The way is the method. The method is transmitted through our teacher's instruction, which should be followed to the letter.

So, maybe we could translate Siu Nim Tao as a method of practising single pointed attention on a single thought or intention?

I guess the question then is, what are you thinking about when you practice?

Training forms.

Forms are there to train the body and mind. We use them to train posture through a process of openess and release to achieve greater freedom of movement.

Mentally, we train the mind to quiet down, so a unique kind of focus or mental state is achieved.

Obviously there is always much more, as the practice runs very deep. In truth the journey never ends.

The changes that happen for people who consistently practice is remarkable, and amazibg to observe over time.

UP! 21/09/2025

UP! The one constant factor we all have to deal with is gravity. You can perceive this pulling down as an enemy, as a fight to stay upright, but this is incorrect. Every creature on and plant on earth...

I often wonder how serious Wing Chun practitioners take the importance of posture.

My Wing Chun mentor Dan Parr handed me a weight one day and asked me to hold it with arms outstretched. Then to hold it close to my body. Obviously holding it closer made carrying the weight easier.

I was surprised that the weight of the head is approx 5kg to 6kg (11 or 12lbs)! The head is balanced on 7 vertebrae and around 20 different muscles, all trying to keep the head upright and stable.

If your posture is poor like in the red diagram, your muscular system will be working overtime. How then can we hope to deliver effortless power and have a freely moving body?

Look at yourself, closely. Examine how you hold yourself and see what you can do to free yourself from self-imposed constraints.
