Six things people say to talk themselves out of Box Comp. And the honest answer to each one.
“I’ll look silly.” — You won’t. Everyone in that room is counting their own reps and trying
not to be sick. Nobody is watching you.
“I’ve never done a comp before.” — Neither had any of us. There’s a first one for everybody,
and yours may as well be in your own gym, with people whose names you already know.
“I can’t do half the movements.” — You’ve got three weeks. Practise. And if it comes to it
and you stand there for two minutes staring at a barbell, nothing happens. No alarm goes off,
nobody boos. Do your best, move on to the next one.
“I’m not fit enough.” — It’s a class with a crowd. Same movements you do every week, just
with more people shouting your name and a prize at the end of it.
“Scaled looks soft.” — Scaled is a division, not a demotion. Pick the one you can actually do
and go and enjoy yourself.
“What if I come last?” — Somebody has to. They get the loudest cheer of the day.
The workouts are hard. Signing up isn’t. You only look silly if you don’t enter.
Saturday 19 September, Thornes Road. Elite, Rx and Scaled.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT — JOE McBRIDE AKA MACCA ❤️🖤

One of our longest-standing members… and somehow, some of you probably won’t even know who he is 😂

Macca is a unique character, known for his incredible movement patterns 🤣 and an absolutely unbelievable mindset.

The bloke is unreal at CrossFit. He’ll happily come in on his own, disappear into a corner and absolutely slog himself with some horrific Thruster and Echo Bike workout that no normal person would willingly choose to do.

But when Macca decides to attack the whiteboard workout, there’s a very good chance his name is sitting right at the top of it.

He’s ridiculously fit, tough as old boots and has been part of this place for pretty much the whole journey.

He’s my boy and I won’t lie… he’s one of my favourites ❤️

Thanks for sticking by us for the past 12 years, boy.

We’ve been through some s**t, had some laughs and made a lot of memories along the way.

Wouldn’t have it any other way.

Big love, Macca ❤️

Before I get into the workout, can we please have a moment for the pin-up lady of Wakefield CrossFit on the first page of this scaled carousel? If this post doesn't get the most likes in Wakefield CrossFit history, I quit.

SCALED. Every one of us started here.

If you’ve been telling yourself you’re not ready to compete — read this one properly. Scaled is a full day of competition with movements you already do in class, on a floor full of people shouting your name.

01 — STRENGTH. Ten minutes to find a 2 rep max front squat from the rack. No clean, no jerk, just get under it and stand it up twice.

02 — GYMNASTICS. Ten minute AMRAP, you go I go: 3 wall walks, 25ft overhead lunge walk with one dumbbell at 20/10, 5 down ups. Steady beats heroic.

03 — METCON. For time: 30 dumbbell clean and press at 20/10, 1000m row, 1000m ski. One dumbbell, both machines, keep moving.

04 — FINISHER. Three minutes. Max calories. Echo bike. Same finisher as Elite — everyone suffers equally on that thing.

Every event is scored on its own, with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Five minutes rest between every event, and coaches on the floor all day.

Saturday 19 September, Thornes Road. First comp? This is the one.

RX. The proving ground.

Same four events as Elite, same clock, same crowd — the loads and the movements just meet you where your training actually is. This is the division for anyone who trains hard four or five times a week and wants to know where they stand.

01 — STRENGTH. Ten minutes to build to your best clean + front squat + jerk. One bar, one complex. Warm up properly and leave yourself three real attempts at the top end.

02 — GYMNASTICS. Ten minute AMRAP, you go I go: 5 handstand press ups, 5 pull ups, 5 down ups. Small sets, fast changeovers. The people who go unbroken in round one usually regret it.

03 — METCON. For time: 30 clean and jerk at 60/40, row 1000m, ski 1000m. Pace the barbell, attack the machines.

04 — FINISHER. Three minutes. Max calories. Echo bike. Whatever’s left, spend it.

Every event scored separately, prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Five minutes rest between every event.

Our last Open Box Comp was a HUGE success. 🔥

We brought athletes from across the UK together and created a real playground for some of the best athletes around. 💪

So… we’re doing it all again.

📅 Saturday 19th September 2026

We’re always looking for ways to improve the experience for our athletes, so this competition will run slightly differently.

You’ll choose your category, and depending on numbers, there will be 1–2 heats per category.

Once those heats are finished, we’ll announce the winners there and then — no waiting around until the end of the day for a podium.

Choose your category.
Bring your best.
Compete hard.
Find out if you’ve got what it takes. 🏆

Joe McGuire 👏

What a difference a year can make.

Joe walked through our doors last year and started on our Beginners Course. Fast forward 12 months and look at the change.

This isn’t some 6-week transformation. It’s a year of turning up, training consistently and making it part of his life.

He’s fitter. He’s stronger. He looks completely different. But more importantly, he’s become a proper part of Wakefield CrossFit.

This is exactly why we run our Beginners Course. You don’t need to be fit to start CrossFit. You don’t need to know what you’re doing. You just need to start.

Joe did exactly that.

One year later… some boy 🔥

Absolutely class mate. Proud of you.

Joe ❤️🖤

3 drills to help build a better kip 👊❤️🖤

1️⃣ Shoulder activation — learn to set the shoulders and actively push into the bar.

2️⃣ Hollow position — sternum back, ribs down and create tension through the whole body.

3️⃣ Reverse hollow into kip — stay LONG. Maintain that shape and tension as you move between hollow and reverse hollow.

The kip starts at the shoulders—not by kicking your legs around.

Master the positions. Control the swing. Then build the skill. 💪

Save this and give them a go next time you’re on the rig.
