General Catering & Housekeeping Assistant

About Bowles Outdoor Centre

Bowles Outdoor Centre is a leading residential outdoor education centre set in the beautiful East Sussex countryside. We provide exciting outdoor learning experiences for children and young people, helping them develop confidence, resilience and teamwork through adventurous activities. We are seeking a reliable and enthusiastic General Catering & Housekeeping Assistant to join our friendly team.

The Role

This varied role supports both the catering and housekeeping functions of the centre. You will help ensure that residents and visitors enjoy a clean, safe and welcoming environment while assisting with the preparation and service of meals.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with food preparation and basic kitchen duties.

Support the serving of meals to residential groups and visitors.

Set up, clear and clean dining areas before and after meal services.

Wash up and maintain high standards of cleanliness in kitchen areas.

Clean accommodation, communal areas and facilities throughout the centre.

Prepare rooms for incoming guests, including changing bedding as required.

Restock housekeeping supplies and report maintenance issues.

Follow all food hygiene, health and safety and safeguarding procedures.

Work collaboratively with colleagues and support other departments when needed.

Person Specification

Reliable, punctual and hardworking.

Positive and friendly attitude.

Good communication and teamwork skills.

Flexible approach to duties and working hours.

Ability to work independently and use initiative.

Previous catering, hospitality or housekeeping experience desirable.

Working Hours

20 hours per week. Shifts will vary according to business needs, with start times from 8:00am and finish times up to 7:30pm. Weekend and occasional evening working may be required.

29 days annual leave including Bank Holidays, pro rata based on a full-time entitlement.

9 rostered days off per month, pro rata, based on a 37.5-hour working week.

We are delighted to be working with East Sussex County Council again this summer to run their Holiday Activities and Food programme.

Great opportunity from the DWP for young people to find out more about getting into work.
Bowles will be running an engaging workshop at the event with the aim of helping people understand the work environment.

We still have places on some Icebreaker Days for kids starting Year 7 in September.
They aim to reduce nerves and anxiety in the run up to secondary school. We put children in groups with kids from their new form and in the morning run team and icebreaking activities. In the afternoon they do one of Bowles' activities such as archery or rock climbing.
Schools with places available are: TW Grammar School for Boys (both campuses), Bennett Memorial, Skinners', Beacon Academy, Mascalls and Sackville.

We still have places on days for Hillview, St Greg's, Beacon, Mascalls, Sackville and Bennett.
There are only a few places for Judd, Weald, TWGSB and Skinners. TWGGS and TGS are fully booked.

Icebreakers help reduce anxiety before starting secondary school by helping kids meet and hopefully make friends with their new classmates.
We run a morning of icebreaker activities and an adventurous activity like rock climbing, archery or a ropes course in the afternoon, all in groups with members of their new class.

Icebreaker Days for new secondary school pupils aim to settle nerves and reduce anxiety in the run-up to starting Year 7.

Children spend the day with other kids from their new form - icebreakers and teamwork activities in the morning and one of Bowles' classic sessions in the afternoon such as rock climbing, archery or high ropes courses.

Icebreaker Days run Monday 24 August to Wednesday 2 September. There are still places for: Hillview, St Greg's, Beacon, Sackville, Mascalls, Weald, Judd, Bennett, Skinners', TGS and TWGSB.

Nearly 500 children are now signed-up to Bowles' Icebreaker Days at the end of the summer holidays.

They are for kids starting new secondary schools - we aim to help reduce anxiety and boost their confidence by running activities with their new schoolmates so they know some faces on their first few days.
We put them in groups with their classmates and run icebreaker activities in the morning and one of Bowles' classic activities like archery or rock climbing in the afternoon.
Feedback from parents and children over the past few years tells us that the days really help settle nerves before the big step up to secondary school.
