A recent revisit to a Tunbridge Wells garden, 18 months after planting 🌿

A classic English country garden planting scheme, combining whites and cool tones with vibrant pops of deeper colour, alongside layers of texture and plenty of fragrance.

It’s lovely to see how the planting has matured and the original design has really started to come to life.

A revisit to this Tunbridge Wells garden, 18 months after planting 🌿

It’s always rewarding to return to a garden and see how the planting has developed, with the original design beginning to reveal its full character as the plants mature and establish.

Designed in a classic English country garden style, the planting combines a cool, restrained palette of greens, whites and deep purples, punctuated by vibrant flashes of colour. Repetition is used throughout the scheme to create rhythm and gently guide the eye across the garden, with drifts of deep purple Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ punctuated by the vivid pink blooms of Papaver ‘Patty’s Plum’.

A softer understorey of fresh greens from Hakonechloa, glaucous foliage from Hylotelephium and the cool white flowers of Astrantia ‘Large White’ provide contrast and texture, while the graceful Rosa ‘Gentle Hermione’ fills the garden with fragrance.

A garden that is continuing to evolve beautifully as the planting matures, creating a richly layered and immersive English country garden.

It’s always rewarding returning to a garden and seeing how the planting has matured, the textures have softened, and the space has truly come to life.

Originally designed as a calm and contemporary courtyard retreat, the garden now has a more established feel, with the planting adding depth, movement and a stronger sense of enclosure.

The planting has developed a softer, more natural character, enhancing the feeling of privacy and creating an intimate space to relax and enjoy.

All the plants have been set out at our Tunbridge Wells projects ready to plant. Looking forward to seeing this one establish and be a riot of colour for years to come.

Three years on, this Tonbridge wildlife garden is settling beautifully into its rhythm.

Designed to feel immersive yet intentional, sweeping planting beds are gently shaped and threaded with meandering pathways that draw you through layers of perennials and grasses. The result is a garden that invites exploration—each turn offering a new composition of colour, movement, and texture.

A carefully balanced mix of native species and select cultivars ensures the garden works hard ecologically while retaining a strong sense of design. From early pollinators to late-season seedheads, the planting provides a rich and continuous source of food and habitat for a wide range of wildlife.

Structural shrubs and light-canopied trees form the backbone of the scheme, giving definition and year-round presence, while softer planting weaves between them to create a naturalistic tapestry that evolves with the seasons.

Moments of pause are just as important as movement. Discreet seating and perch points are positioned to take in long views across the planting and towards the wildlife pond—offering a quiet connection to both visiting and resident fauna.

A garden that demonstrates how biodiversity and considered design can coexist—naturalistic in character, yet carefully composed.
