Think you need to get fitter before trying CrossFit?

We hear that almost every week.

The truth is, nobody starts at their fittest. Every workout is coached and adjusted to suit the person in front of us. Whether it's your first session in years or your first ever, you'll do a version that's right for you.

You don't have to "get fit first".

You just have to start.

Here's how we coach, and it's a big part of why it works.

We teach you to move well first. Then we build consistency. Then, once that's there, we add intensity.

Nobody gets handed a heavy barbell on day one. You learn the movements properly and build real strength from the ground up, and because it's done right, it actually lasts.

Drop us a DM if you've got a question, we're always happy to chat!

Katherine Cullen

Some of the most important work that happens around this gym never actually happens inside it.

Katherine is married to Nick, one of our amazing coaches, and nobody hears more about CrossFit than the spouse of a coach.

Nick has taken and passed both his Level One and Level Two Trainer Certificates. Practical coaching assessments and a written exam, and what they give a coach is the skill to take a whole room through a workout safely. Katherine lived every bit of both with him. The studying, the late nights, the nerves going in.

That was only the start. For the two years since, she has built her weeks around his classes. Looking after their two girls, arranging her own diary, so that Nick can be in here coaching you.

None of that shows up on a whiteboard. There is no leaderboard for it, and nobody claps at the end of it.

Well, today they do. Katherine is nothing short of an unsung hero, and through her love and her support she has given CrossFit Tunbridge Wells another incredible coach.

Then she went and did it herself. Katherine signed up for Bring a Friend Week in January last year and joined the month after. Eighteen months on, she is in two or three times a week, often straight off a train back from a long day in London. A Summer Throwdown team last year, another this year. And a back squat that has climbed to her own bodyweight, which was nowhere near the conversation when she started.

She will never once tell you she is competitive. Watch her in the last two minutes of a workout and you will not need telling. There is a cheerleader in there from years back who never quite retired, and once Katherine has decided she is doing something, she does it properly. If you have been in a class with her you will know exactly what we mean.

You will often spot her girls, Dory and Alice, here as well, cheering the pair of them on from the side and doing their own little versions of the workout in the corner. Not really the workout. Just copying whichever parent is on the floor.

Katherine, thank you. For all of it that nobody saw, and for making the Cullen family such a loved part of our community.

Life probably isn't getting any less busy.

Which is exactly why building a routine matters.

Our members don't rely on motivation alone. They simply know their class time, their coach is expecting them, and their friends will be there too.

That consistency is where the real results come from.

Nutrition doesn't have to be complicated.

If you want one simple place to start, it's this: eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, a little starch, and go easy on the sugar.

No apps, no weighing everything, no misery. Just real food, most of the time. Start there and you're already ahead of most people.

Santi is not going to enjoy this post, because he doesn't talk about any of what follows. Which is precisely why we're going to.

If he sees a class with only one person booked into it, a late evening one, say, when it's dark and cold and nobody much fancies it, he'll change his own booking and go to that one instead. So that whoever it is doesn't have to train on their own. He doesn't mention it to anyone. He just turns up, and an hour that would have been a lonely one becomes a good session with a friendly face.

If there's a new person in the room, he's clocked them before the warm-up has finished. He'll be over at the whiteboard introducing himself, asking how they're getting on, making sure they know at least one person's name before the clock starts. Ask anyone who joined recently, if they were in a class with Santi, he probably spoke to them first.

Last Christmas he noticed something wasn't right with one of the bikes. He ordered the part himself, out of his own pocket. Nobody asked him to. He'd spotted a problem and quietly gone and sorted it.

He's funny with it, too. He takes the training seriously and himself not seriously at all, which is rarer than it sounds, and it's the thing that makes a nervous room relax. From pulling faces through the window on his way in to make people jump to getting involved in the CrossFit Open and the Summer Throwdown.

None of this goes unnoticed. It just goes uncelebrated. So today we're celebrating it.

Santi, thank you. For looking after people long before anybody thought to ask you to, and for never once making a thing of it. This is a warmer, friendlier and even more awesome room because you're in it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: "I honestly can’t recommend this community highly enough. It’s so much more than just a gym. Wherever you are on your fitness journey, you’ll feel welcome, make great friends, and grow in both confidence and strength.

The kids’ fitness programme is fantastic too. Our whole family has been part of CFTW for over three years, and we genuinely can’t imagine life without it now.

A huge thank you to all of the incredible coaches who create such a supportive, encouraging and fun environment. You’ve built something really special." – Jules

Thank you 🌟

You don't need more hours in the day – you just need one hour that's yours.

📧 One hour to switch off from work emails.

📋 One hour without the endless to-do list.

🧘♀️ One hour that leaves you feeling better than when you arrived.

So come by for a class. Your future self will thank you for making the time.

The most common thing we hear? "I just need to get a bit fitter before I start."

You really don't. Every single workout is adjusted to you. A complete first-timer and someone who's trained for years do the same session, just at their own level, weight and pace.

You start exactly where you are today, and we take it from there. That's the whole point of being properly coached.
